Default Dwarf Fortress (PC Game)

Dwarf Fortress - 'Losing is Fun'

It's only the best Rogue-like Fantasy World Simulation Management game out there () and a new version has been released.

The change log features such classics as:

- "I had a dragon fight some lions, and after a little bit of dragonfire and close combat, I ended up with a dragon covered with the gramatically-in-progress "lion melted fat spatter"."

- "It is now possible to "flay" a creature. Have fun"

- "Tissue layers can boil off when exposed to extreme heat"

- "Fractured bone can be knocked inwards to cause damage to organs, like forcing a jagged piece of skull into the brain."

Oh and Dwarfs now have beards, apparently

I know what I'll be playing for the rest of the week

Getting Started

Downloads:

Older Version Stable and no graphical glitches.

New Version. Buggy, but new features, yay!

(Both downloads come with the May Green tileset)

DF Stories

Reading about Dwarf Fortress can be almost as good as playing it:

- Interesting introductory AAR over at Rock, Paper, Shotgun here.

- You absolutely MUST read The Fable of Catten and Eagle (Bottom of first post)

- Stunningly epic short story here

- Totally wonderful illustrated AAR: Bronzemurdered

- Of course, you have to love DF for spawning the mother of all AARs: Boatmurdered (I've linked to update 11, cause that's where it really starts to get good.)

DF Inspired Comics and Art

(None of the above are anything to do with me, obv)

Looks epic! Brings me back to days long gone... I used to play these adventure games that looked just like this. And yes, they were awesome!

(back then, there was no DirectX, you only had X.... and X..... well, you have to come up with yourself.. imagination was everything! - and sometimes I wish present day game developers would look back a bit more..)

Dwarf Fortress is brilliant. I've heard it said that if 15 years ago games hadn't gone the way of the graphics card, we would have loads of really detailed, intricate simulations.

And that's what Dwarf Fortress is like; it has dynamic weather, it has fluid physics, your happy-go-lucky Dwarfs can become cold hearted b***ards if they witness too much death.

It simulates anything and everything, and all because it doesn't have to worry about flashy graphics.

ahh reminds me of my Ultima 2-3-4-5-6 & Phantasie 1-2-3 days !

Stumbled upon this in there forums :

In which I play an Adventurer in the new version. (SPOILERS)

oooooooooooooooook...

Ah the day when an online game (whatever the graphics) will be able to have this richness !

The only acceptable 'Lone Wolf' you'll be allowed to play : http://www.projectaon.org/en/Main/Home

Haha, my friend got me into it, so I had someone to show me around. The UI is incredibly obtuse, but it's worth it

Updated with link to vid tutorial.

And I think I shall have a look for Boatmurdered as well

I've first heard about this game on RPG Codex. Tried it as well, but couldn't really get into it... I didn't feel like spending an entire weekend going thru the tutorials and stuff. Ah well, I might as well try playing it again after finishing NWN2OC+Mask of the Betrayer.

Ah, now this is a great game. Just downloaded the update now, I'll look forward to playing it

I'll admit to never getting very far in Fortress mode, but the quest mode was pretty darn fun in itself. A screenshot from one of my more epic encounters:
