Yeah, crazy the idea. The YMC-130 was designed specifically to land on a carrier. The purposed mission was to land in the Iranian soccer stadium via 10,000,000 JATO rockets, take off via 10,000,000 JATO rockets, then the aircraft would land on an aircraft carrier and go home.

They do quite a bit for humanitarian aid.

Med evac and aid flights happen on a daily basis.

Yes they do. I don't think any aircraft can replace it. The C-17 does a great job and is right along the lines of the C-130 for it's main purpose, but it doesn't match it in terms of how many roles it can perform. The C-17 does a great job of closing the gap between the C-141 and the C-130.

You mean the gap between the C-5 and C-130. C-141 Starlifters have been completely replaced by the C-17 and retired.

Actually, the C-141 was a bit of a gap filler between the C-5 and C-130. The C-17 has better unprepared runway landing ability, so the C-17 more of fits between the C-141 and C-130. It does the job of a C-141, albeit the C-141B could lift more troops than the C-17, but it also does the job of a C-130 (with the exception of SOCOM duties, i.e. the AC-130 and the MC-130).

C-17 and older aircraft bring wounded guys back to the UK. If you have watched a repatriation, that's probably the tail of a C-17 that the soldiers slow marched onto, alongside unconcious casulties that you don't see. C-17s also run a lot of humanitarian missions. Haiti etc in recent times, as well as India's flooding for the non-domestical delivery of International Humanitarian Aid. Payload is everything in widening use and getting value for money for the taxpayer. Although anyone who's been through Brize deploying will know that the UK airbridge is f**king wank and has nothing to do with C-17s, so not sure why that was brought up. A bridge goes both ways.
