Looks like the Type 26 (and Type 45 eventually) will get the Oto Melara 127/64 cannon, a big step-up from the current 4.5" Mk8.

Well to be fair, you need people to build a carrier, and people needs jobs... There's a plus.

Problem is that it won't make many new jobs. The same people that built the Nimitz class will build the Ford class.

Wonderful though all this discussion is.. can we get back on topic? Not sure how a thread about UK frigates even got on to US aircraft carriers.

Interesting, I thought the Type 45 somehow upgraded the old cannons for it as during testing it did surprisingly well, even the army spotters at the ranges where very surprised with the accuracy of the cannon and how many rounds it managed to get down range.

What so much better with this cannon than the old one on the Type 45?

One huge advantage is the range of the specially developed Vulcano round with very long range (70-120KM). It comes in three variants, non-guided, IR guided, GPS guided.

Each variant increases in range and could provide an amazing capability upgrade over the current 4.5" Mod 1 which has a range of roughly 22KM. The 127/64 also has a faster RoF, lighter weight and a longer barrel.
