Default Introducing The Thing mini mod for PR!

A new horror mini mod Inspired by:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Thing_(1982_film)

Onil's PR:Z

FastJack's Coop Insurgency Game Mode.

Artic Lion Map and the Dutch forces.

Mod Story: (Sequel to the 1982 movie) A parasitic extraterrestrial lifeform that assimilates other organisms and in turn imitates them infiltrates a Norwegian and later an American Antarctic research stations. The creature takes the appearance of the researchers that it absorbs, and paranoia develops within the group. The American team tries in vane to contain the Thing and prevent a world wide outbreak and the creature escapes.

In January 1983 an entire Siberian town had been subject to a similar lack of communications and weird behaviour of its small civilian population as seen previously on the Research stations. These shocking similarities led international authorities to believe that indeed the same extraterrestrial creature could be involved. A small group of scientists who where stationed at the nearest American research station in Antartica are sent to the place where the latest "events" took place. You are a member of that team, or perhaps you've already been assimilated by THE THING!

Mod's Basic Premise:

- Based on the brand new COOP insurgency game mode by Fastjack.

- Single 1x1 KM winter map: Heavy snowstorm, low visibility, Siberian theme and inspired by the Artic Lion map.

- 30-60 min. game length.

- Very scarce weapons and ammo. Weapons based on the 1982 movie.

- kits with low powered civilian weapons randomly placed on buildings around them map.

- Allies or enemies are not shown on the map. (Just like PR:Z).

- Both teams can use any kit (friendly, enemy and pick up kits) and also any vehicle.

- Team 1 (the Outbreak Response Team) consists of up to 6 human players.

- Team 2 consists of a single human player: "The Thing" (Who uses the squad leader kit) and 30 Ai controlled Civilians.

- Forced team switch upon death for Team 1. (So one life for them) They can then spawn on team 2 as a civilian.

Note: As a civilian on team 2 they can still help team 1 by letting themselves be captured or picking up weapons and fighting The Thing. They can also now help The Thing by shooting at the surviving team 1 players or killing other civilians.

- There is no additional ammunition on the map other than what your chosen/picked up kit had so be careful on how you use your ammo!

- Focused on 1982 cold war era iron sights weapons. (There are only 2 zoom scoped weapons in the mod)

Objectives:

- The Outbreak Response Team (team 1) must capture 15 unarmed civilians in order to get intel on the location of the creature's landed flying saucer (a single cache) and destroy it before they are all killed/assimilated by the creature.

- The Thing (Team 2) must prevent the Outbreak Response Team from destroying the cache (UFO). He can do so by killing/assimilating the Outbreak Response Team members or by killing the civilians before the Outbreak Response Team captures them. (Since it takes 5 min. for the Ai civilians to respawn killing them is a viable strategy to delay the team 1's progress).

Outbreak Response Team (ORT) Mechanics:

- The Outbreak Response Team is not punished by killing civilians other than sliming their chances of getting enough intel on the cache location before the Thing kills them all. (Civilians take 5 min. to respawn so it could be catastrophic not to capture all civilians).

- The Outbreak Response Team members are initially paradropped and armed only with a combat knife and a M1911A1 Pistol. Upon landing they must find the crate that was also paradropped to equip themselves with 6 limited specialized kits. This crate gets destroyed 10 min. into the game so the research team must hurry to get their equipment.

Team 2 "The Thing" Mechanics:

- The Thing looks exactly like like a regular unarmed civilian.

- With his default kit he has access to:

Slot 1) A one hit kill melee attack that also has heat vision activated with the right mouse click.
Slot 2) A one hit kill melee attack that also has a zoomed right click view.
Slot 3) Mines (x2)
Slot 4) Booby traps (x3

- The Thing has increased health (300%) and twice the regular stamina.

- The Thing slowly regenerates health and do not takes falling damage.

- The Thing can pick up any kit and so he can disguise himself as any other civilian or even as a team 1 player and use any and all the weapons on the map.

- The Thing can re-spawn on and also use his flying saucer (Cache) to rearm / re-pick his default kit.

- The Thing can also re-spawn on Infected/Armed Ai civilians around the map.

Team 2 "The Civilians" Mechanics:

- 90% of the Ai civilians are unarmed and won't attack the team 1 players but 10% will spawn with a Shovel and a Makarov Pistol or as Medics.

These armed civilians are considered infected so they do not provide intel for team 1.

The infected civilians also don't move after spawning (have a "move to" of 0) but act as a spawn point for the Thing so killing them will prevent the Thing from spawning on that location.

- Ai civilians have 5 min wounded time so a dead Ai civilian will take quite some time to give the team 1 another "capture opportunity".

- Ai civilians have custom strategies for our map, making them patrol and move between different important points on the map. (So they are not sitting ducks waiting to be killed/captured). This mechanic makes it easier for the Thing to mimic civilians, moving between them and confusing the other players.

Kits:

Outbreak Response Team specialized Kits:

- Leader: Combat Knife, SIG-Sauer P226R Pistol, Binocs, Flare Pistol, Signal Grenade
- Assault: Combat Knife, Diemaco c8a1 rifle, HE Grenade
- Recon: Combat Knife, HK416 with bypod, Grappling Hook
- CQC Specialist: Combat Machette, Norinco 982 shotgun, Incendiary Grenade
- Demolitionist: M1911A1 Pistol, M79 grenade launcher, C4
- Biologist: Combat Knife, Vz61 Skorpion, Patches, Epipen, Smoke Grenade.

The combat knife and the shotguns can be used to capture civilians.
PS: All Specialized Kits are restricted to 1 per team. (That means that if more human players join team 1 they will have to play with the basic kit or pick another one from a fallen ally or a civilian.

Civilian Team 2 Kits (All civilians look the same no matter the kit):
- Regular Civ: Completely Unnarmed
- Local Medic: Medic Kit, Epipen, Smoke Grenade
- Armed Infected: Shovel, Makarov Pistol

Pickup Kits: (The Thing, The ORT and the Human Civilians can all pick up these kits).
- Kit 1: Tokarev Pistol, Molotov Cocktail (2 kits randomly spawned on the map)
- Kit 2: Ithaca Shotgun, C4 (2 kits randomly spawned on the map)
- Kit 3: AK-47 with Bayonet, Flare gun (1 kit randomly spawned on the map)
- Kit 4: Mosin Nagrant Obrez, Booby Trap (1 kit randomly spawned on the map)
- Kit 5: Mosin Nagrant m91-30 pu, Grappling Hook (1 kit randomly spawned on the map)
- Kit 6: Flamethrower (1 kit randomly spawned on the map)

PS: C4, incendiary grenades and molotov cocktails can be used to destroy the cache.

Vehicles:

- Russian Logi Truck with repair station. (2x)
- Civilian White Car (1x)
- Civilian Blue Car (1x)
- Civilian White truck (1x)
- Civilian Scania Truck (1x)
- Quads (2x)
- Snowmobiles (2x)
- UH-6 Little Bird (1x)

Vehicle specific mechanics:

- Vehicles do not respawn after being destroyed.
- All Vehicles slowly loose health while used. (To represent fuel consumption).
- When 50% health the vehicle will stop moving.
- There is a gas station on the map that re-fuels (Repairs) the vehicles.
- The russian Logi truck can deploy a mobile repair station in case a vehicle ran out of "fuel" before getting to the gas station.

Notes on the cache location:

- The UFO (cache) spawns on a random location outside of the map's playable area. This prevents the players from just searching for the cache and not capturing civilians. Once the location of the cache is known the team 1 players with C4 or Incendiary Grenades must leave the combat area and place the c4 or incendiary before the 20 seconds that it takes for them to freeze to death.

Reasons for the mod:
- Most of the assets and features that the mod needs are already in place in PR and/or done for PR:Z.

- It will offer a unique gameplay not found on most FPS out there. (6 vs 1 mixed with Ai)

- The lack of friendly and map indicators, the scarce weapons and the map ambience create a sense of tension, immersion and paranoia that is very hard to match

- It will provide a sane distraction for players waiting to get enough people for the next PR 50 vs. 50 match a The Thing mod only required 7 or even less players to be played as it was intended.

- The Outbreak Response Team Players will have to use communication and all their senses to tell another friendly player/Ai civilian from The Thing that is hunting them. IE: If they see a Civilian killing another civilian it is most likely that one of them is The Thing!

- The Thing player has to be super smart on how he ambushes, moves, places traps and specially how he mimics the other players and/or the Civilian Ai's behaviour so he can remain undetected until ready to make his move .

- Smart The Thing players not only avoid doing something that will make the other team suspicious, not to mention leading them to his cache, but also confuses the other team into killing each other and/or innocent civilians.

- Very funny situations come out of all these mechanics, like players screaming: "Are you human"? Or just being paranoid in general for the whole duration of the match

Progress:

The mod is in its early stages but we have the following things already in place:

- We are using the map Frostbite night with custom snow/lights/sky effects already ported to PR.
- We have the Ai working and doing their patrol routines correctly.
- The Kits for the Outbreak Response Team and the Civilians are done.
- Many of the features from PR:Z already ported into the mod.
- Concept, scope and aims of the mod are all set and achievable probably by the time PR 1.5 releases. (A little bit latter if assets change too much).

I will be posting pictures and more info very soon!

We are looking for suggestions, thoughts and team members. Any help/feedback is welcome.

PS: Some features may change according to the setbacks/limitations we find.

PR has become not a great game on its own but also a great platform for additional creations/content so special thanks to the Devs and the community for making PR possible.

Oh my god, can't wait to try it. I realy loved the atmosphere of the movie. The worst thing you can't trust anybody. You have to move in pairs but if somebody get killed and the other survived that is f**king suspicious. You can't trust him anymore and you will be more and more paranoid... I hope this mod can create this feeling for players. Good job!

There will be only local chat? Maybe there could be some kind of radio for a couple of kits and can be used like squadleader chat. I think a global radio like squad chat will be too OP.

What exactly are you porting from PR:Z?

Usually one would ask first before using stuff from other mods... no matter if credit is being given or not you should always ask for permission first.

Hello Onil, sorry to bother you with this.

Actually I was planning on using your switch team on death code but I found it to be too complex for our needs so now I am working on my own solution for that.

Kit spawn and randomization I am working on with another dev and not using PR:Z's system.

So PR:Z remains more as an inspiration and we plan on having a similar eerie atmosphere.

Will you remove rallypoint? Will you be able to talk from team1 to The Thing on local chat? But if you leave squad chat, then you could easily different squadmembers (team1) from the Thing because you can tell him: If you arent the Thing talk on squadchat or you can remeber his name from scoretab and look if his name is the one thats talking on localchat.

Will you remove map image, so when you open map you see: location of cache , your POZITION on map (your not seeing directly where you are,no image- so if team1 wants to gather they need to talk on squadchat and describe where they are) , squadleader marker for squadmembers can move around or gather more easlier ?

And in all: scary mod

There was once a Zombie Mod called Omnicide from MasterCA (R.I.P.), Hjid created for him a pythoncode when a zombie killed a player, this player got switched to the zombies side.

Maybe he can help you with that, try to contact him.

Switching and locking players on death is probably the simplest thing you can do in BF2 Python...
