Exclamation Russia created nuclear propulsion engine

During president Vladimir Putin's press conference was announced a newly developed weapon - a winged rocket with compact nuclear-powered engine that can fly almost indefinitely for any distance. It can fly by taking any route disregarding distance or fuel factor while dodging enemy AA perimeter to reach its target.

If this technology reaches civilian market, then it will be the greatest invention since first internal combustion engine. A breakthrough for all mankind. Just imagine different applications for this technology.

The idea of a long distance nuclear powered aircraft is nothing new, the Americans experimented with the idea during the cold war to have a constantly flying bomber. I also don't really understand how it will be 'invincible' as cruise missiles are able to be shot down today.

The kanyon nuclear powered torpedo however, that really is interesting.

So did the Russians, although the Russian version radiated the pilots and spued out radioactive waste out of the exhaust since it was a direct system, unlike the Americans indirect system

The big issues are mainly in firstly the Shielding, if you don't want to radiate the pilots to death, and secondly having a light and efficient indirect system. TBH it could be done with today's technology, and even with past technology, but the political will for it isn't there.

Im really worried about the exhaust gases. That thing shoots radiation wherever it goes.

The SLAM as proposed would carry a payload of many nuclear weapons to be dropped on multiple targets, making the cruise missile into an unmanned bomber. After delivering all its warheads, the missile could then spend weeks flying over populated areas at low altitudes, causing tremendous ground damage with its shock wave and radiation from its unshielded reactor. When it finally lost enough power to fly, and crash-landed, the engine would have a good chance of spewing deadly radiation for months to come.
I know we're talking nuclear war here, but damn that's dark..

They don't want to simply kill you but ensure anyone who survives cannot live off the land, this seems like a pretty effective use of what they have. Scary but efficient.
