Default Boxer for Australia (and land 400 in general)

Queensland beats Victoria in battle for Army's $5 billion light armoured vehicle spend - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Today the Boxer CRV won phase 2 of the land 400 program (225 vehicles) against the competing AMV35 to replace the ASLAV in Australian army service. I was meaning to make a thread about land 400 since mid 2016 but decided against it because despite the relatively large scale of it, it didn't really offer anything new in terms of design like the FRES or new Armata threads did. But now that something has actually been announced I thought i'd make this thread for this and all future updates.

Some footage of firing tests (note the size of the AMV and Boxer vs the aslav at the end).

As an interesting side note however is it has been fairly heavily implied that should Australia select the Boxer, Britain as well would then select the Boxer for its MIV program (500-700 vehicles) without having a similar competition because Australia has basically just run the trials for them. An announcement was expected late last year on the MIV program but was suspected to be delayed to see the Australian result to quash any resistance to a single source acquisition of the Boxer. Time will tell but effectively Rheinmetall have seemingly won 2 of the biggest 8x8 orders happening right now.

Phase 3 of Land 400 (450 vehicles) starts in a few months and will likely include the usual suspects of CV90/PUMA/LYNX/ASCOD plus Boxer CRV and AMV35 competing again. There are also rumours that the bushmaster replacement will be a flat top Boxer as well.

Now we Dutch just need to buy AUG's and Abrams tanks and our armies are the same again. Lol.

Well it's been reported that the Dutch are looking into getting the Lance turret (same as one pictured above) on a few of their Boxers as well so it might just end up that way .

Our MoD is looking into a lot of things though from what I hear, there might be members on this board better versed in it then I am.

The budget however is slowly being raised and I hear the air force is looking into upgrade the existing Apache fleet with new airframes to AH-64E Guardian specification, the navy into new submarines and frigates and etc. I wouldn't be surprised if the army is looking into up-gunning our Boxers, especially for the light brigade which is epically under armed.

I heard that in the previous table of organisation they wanted to deploy the infantry with Bushmasters and MB's and only specialised forces like engineers and ambulances as Boxers. Which IMHO seems like the reverse of what should be happening. Apparently they've changed that now so a turret armed Boxer would be a good addition in my humble civilian opinion. Especially if Britain ends up picking up Boxers as well!

Considering the MoD has a hard-on for interoperability with Germany/Britain/Belgium

Boxers in the Dutch army are being used for several different purposes using modular kits. There are ambulance, engineer, command, infantry (armed with .50) and logistic variants.

It seems like a good vehicle, even though I spoke to some crews and apparently they are very prone to technical issues because of all the electronical and digital mechanics. And they can't climb small hills very well.

Do you know how much the modules are actually used in Dutch service? Or is it just another cool but somewhat useless feature and most modules stay with the same drive module forever.

Form what I saw and heard, really good vehicle for Australian Army. To be honest, I expected that Boxer will win. For Phase 3, It will be close fight betwean CV90 and Puma.

I honestly have no idea, I don't think they switch out modules on active duty vehicles. Wouldn't really make sense.
Only scenario I could imagine a use for that is when several break down during operations and out of the remaining operational ones you quickly switch an abundant type to a rarer one.

Anyways the modular system is still very good because having several specialty vehicles on the same chassis greatly increases maintenance efficiency while reducing costs.

I'm slowly turning this thread into the 'Boxer for Britain' thread but whatever here is a good link on the history of the boxer and UK involvement.
