Are you running the executable as administrator?

Try disabling av/firewall to see if there is a block there

start the game up in windowed mode = sometimes you will get an error which is more descriptive.

Also post up your system information in the launcher

The only requirement is a legit key, so if he can find a backup copy of BF2 that somebody has posted on the internet...
