Hey all.

Over the past week now I've been working on some a new Wooden Fence series of statics to replace the old "broken_fences" which where very buggy and didn't offer everything mappers wanted from a fence static set.

These new Fences also include a lot of new gameplay features, some of which have been suggested by the community (http://www.realitymod.com/forum/f18-pr-bf2-suggestions/84450-forgotten-hope-2-fencing.html) and others are things we have thought about ourselves, will go more into this later.

This new static series in total includes 22 new statics (although 3 of them are the old "broken_fences", fixed up and improved) which includes the following statics:

New Gameplay Features

As mentioned above, these new fences include a series of new gameplay features. This includes:

You can now crawl under the fences so you don't have to jump over them and loose all your stamina in the process, although you still can jump over the fences if you choose to.

Vehicles can now drive "though" the fences, but have to go over a sort of speed bump which slows most vehicles down quite a bit, which is the best alternative that we can think of other than having destructible fences, which we can't have as that would mean we would exceed the networkable limit when used a lot.

Added Destroyable Wooden and Metal Gates in to the mix which vehicles can smash though.

Added a Stile which a placer can climb over the fence with without having to loose any stamina via jumping over fence. This is archived by using a stair material on the stile so its just like climbing up some stairs ingame.

New Features & Improvements

On top of the new gameplay features, I've also added many other features and improvements to these fences over the old ones.
Centred the pivots to the models which will mean that the fences will not stop drawing when viewed at odd angles/distances and will also mean LODs dont switch too soon/late and generally improving how the object is drawn. Also Anchors have been added to the statics so they still can be placed easily by the mapper.

Crated non-broken versions which can be joined up and make a complete fence. Before there was only broken versions of this type
Added much more verity to the mix including non-broken fences so mappers can really be imaginative with how they use the fences.
Added Custom Lightmap UVs that minimize the amount of wasted lightmap space while keeping the quality of a high-rez lightmap by using non-square lightmap sizes, like 512x128px sized lightmaps. Also these Custom LM UVs also come with LM samples for use with BF2 Editor LMing that support the new LM sizes, although 3DsMax LMing scripts have yet to be modified to support the new LM sizes, that should be with us by the time we need them. This is something that to my knowledge has never been done in BF2 before and will save a huge amount of lightmap space, really just this is probably worthy of its own blog post :p

actually the stile is brand new, but the old "broken fences" did use to have a non-working stile in them that was part of the 100m version but it wasn't the same model and was only there for visuals, you couldn't climb up and over it like you can with my new one, and you can't place it separately from the fence like you can with my new one.

Ye, I have 3 of these type of stiles just on the farm alone so I only need to walk 1km from my front door to see one of these stiles :p

actually its the other way round. Lighter vehicles get slowed down a huge amount by these, while tanks just glide over them :D

The vehicle-drive-over-fence solution is ... Well, kinda ok... What happens if you make the collission box higher? Right now it is at the base of the fence, I can imagine a wheel being in the middle of the fence. Bah

I'm also really excited about the custom lightmap UVs, as these would have usually taken up a lot of space on the atlas.

Ingenious idea with the ability to ramp a vehicle over them, these will be great on other maps featuring the current fences like Iron Ridge :)

All the vehicles I've tested on it so far have had no huge issues with getting over them, most require a bit of a run up but not much more. If there are any vehicles which have any issues with them in further testing I can always tweak the col mesh very easily.

I've tested to see the dest gates dont do this and so far after quite a load of smashing though them with lots of different vehicles, this so far hasn't happened which I believe is due to the gates having a much thicker col mesh that can't so easily get under the wheels, and when it dose it can't screw things up.

How ever its still funny as hell when it dose happen :p

Well I didn't make this just because of a community suggestion, I mainly made it because Shijia Valley needed to use a lot of fences and the old fences where simply too buggy for use and didn't offer everything AFsoccer needed from them and it wasn't that hard to fix them etc but while fixing them, I kept the community suggestions in mind :)
In fact I had everything modelled and done in like 3 days, just I spent another 4 or so days playing about with making custom LM UVs, crating samples, testing the LMs and also playing with materials so rifle bullets didn't destroy the gates but vehicles and large shells/explosions could :p

Good to know. Is this system possible with the small white chest high walls as well?

As in the same sort of slope of the colmesh for infantry, but it doesn't have any effect to vehicles. Basically a reverse of some statics atm (like how vehicles hit an invisible wall under the hotel static but infantry can walk through it), that way a tank can chill next to the wall but infantry can walk over it without getting their sprint bar raped.

Ye it can be applied to a few things, hedgerows may be one thing we might apply it too in the future as well for example but we will have to see what happens.

but it's also nice to know that you can crawl under any segment of the fence too... so you don't have to look for the steps (called stiles) if you don't want to.

Actually, there is lol... In NE Slovenia and some other parts of thw world they have a different design withhoverlapping diagonal planks... i couldnt find any pictures, but if you played Rally Trophy, on Russia stages there is such a fence in the fields...

Yes but you have to understand that 30% of Americans can't locate the USA on a world map. Many also tell me that the UK is near Europe and Africa is a third world country.

Would love to see a British woodland map. (would love to see more maps in general) :D

And on top of what AF said, you can still jump over any section of fence just that if you jump over the fence you loose 1/2 your stamina where if you climb over a stile, you don't loose any stamina :D

Mainly for Eastern EU and Asia, although Asia doesn't have that many fences there are still a few and more popping up in China now they are producing more livestock.

Honestly they can be put on any map that features either a rural area or an area with parks etc, wooden fences most likely appear in every single country in the world somewhere.

Yep :)
It took me two full days to replace the old wooden fences with the new ones... so that should give you an idea of how many are on the map.

Should I re-download the editor package? Is there a separate section for additional content?

Or is it something that am I not allowed to have.

Also how does one attain RCON status. Is there an appeal process - does a map need to be completed and published ect?

[R-DEV]s and [R-CON]s receive all new statics when they are ready (with a few exceptions). "Community Mappers" need to request use of the new statics from the developer who made them and swear not to redistribute them (which if they do there hopes of becoming part of the PR Team are over). Then if everything checks out and we see you need the statics for working then we will let you have them but since your working on an Afghan map, I don't see why you would need these fences?

As for how one gets [R-CON] (or even [R-DEV] for that matter), basically once we, the PR team see good work coming from an individual and also a good attitude to working as part of the team, taking on feedback etc then we will make that individual an [R-CON] once we belive the time is right and if good work keeps on coming from that individual after becoming an [R-CON] (possibly even to the point where they fully finish and release there map) then we [R-DEV] them.

There is a plank in the way unfortunately but you wouldn't want to use these fences as a firing position anyways since the wood is penetrable and any bullet that hits the wood, will come strait though and hit you in the nuts anyways, + lots of wood splinters to go with it :mrgreen:
