We wanted to improve the distant sounds in Project Reality some more. [R-DEV]Jaymz has been working his butt off to implement completely new distant sounds.

Without further ado, have a good listen to what it will sound like in the upcoming release of PR!

Note : BF2 headphone spatialisation was on during these recordings. Please use headphones to listen.

in-game, however, it will work properly for headphones and speaker setups alike :)

What's lame about that? If you don't have a full server of testers, bots sure come in handy. It's about the sounds, not the video or who or what's in it :-\.

he tested it on SP, you can see that one of the R-BOTs got teamkilled

also, 0.95 eh? :-P.. this release will be nothing more than awesome

These new sounds are AMAIZING!! Reminds me of those times when the military personel were training (somewhere near the city) and you could hear the sound of small arms and apc's firing. What I'm trying to say is that these sound are pretty damn realistic :thumbsup:.

Edit: Noticed something. At 3:50 for example, the sound of the rocket being fired from the Apache is louder than the rocket blast when it hits it's target. Is that how it supposed to be ? :)

very good work..but i think the explosions needs to be louder IMO. maybe its just the video but i could bearly hear the nade landing 150m away. keep up the good work guys

explosions are pure win. But the crackling of the guns is still off isnt it? IMO its still an improvement over what we have fo sho.

There's no signs of the devs slowing down or wrapping things up yet so you can safely assume they'll continue beyond 1.0.

All 1.0 really means in the context of PR is that it's a later version than 0.95.

Somehow I think this distant sounds update is way better than the previous one!

I haven't really been in a warzone or anything but judging from many videos, it sounds very realistic.

I don't know if the 1st person sounds might have been tweaked also?

Well from what I know, PR v1.0 means that the British faction (which is the main faction in the eyes of the DEVs) is at it's end stage. Armor, weapons, equipement, kits, etc are completed.
Project Reality started as a platform to experiment changes twords realism and theyr impact in the BF2 engine.
I quote from the "ABOUT" section on this web-site:
"The ultimate goal continues to be the path to develop and release Project Reality v1.0, a stable and complete build which will be a markedly increased step up from the Project Reality Mini-Mod beginnings. This will include a complete British faction, including their various soldier classes, weaponry, vehicles and assets, as well as additional factions created by the community with help from the core developers."

Again, from what I know, the 1st person weapon sounds are how they are supposed to be (how you would hear that surtoun type of weapon firing in real life). The distant sounds were the problem :), but, Jaymz in all his awesomeness fixed that problem, as these distant sounds are pretty damn close to those you would hear in real life (if not exactly).

I really hope that work with distant sounds in ArmA won't be damaged because of lack of supporting EAX. Like many guys here I'm using X-Fi, you know.

I'm afraid it's impossible to properly evaluate the quality of these sounds from the video, especially lower calibres.

- the youtube audio compression does muffle high frequencies on low bitrates while making them somehow brittle and unpleasant at high bitrates. You can't really get very good audio quality on youtube. And lossless codecs have generally problem with anything that looks similar to a dirac impulse = has big differences in amplitude.
- bots in PRSP tend to shoot on full auto like.. well, robots. Which means that in multiplayer the ambient shots will be spread much more naturally.
- there may be CMSS 3d active on the Creative soundcard. This feature enhances 3d feeling while reducing the audio quality considerably.

All of that did influence the quality of the video and yet is kicks so much ass... I'm really looking forward to hear the new stuff in the game.

It recorded the BF2 headphone spatialisation for some reason. For future updates I'll record in 2.1 but for this one, only listen on headphones.

I'm currently serving in the Finnish army and in fact we were just training and camping in the woods near one Finnish army firing range. And from my experience that's exactly what distant gunfire sounds like. When you're closer, like 100 meters from the firing, you can actually hear a "swoosh" after the bang (discharge) as the bullet travels through the air.

Awesome sounds, guess U recorded some distant small arms at Bovington (or w/e) too cuz it really reminds me of the firing ranges at the army (while current sounds dont).
BF2:PR cant have the best graphics, but it will have the best sounds which are as important (if not more) as the graphics :D.

Very sexy indeed! Nothing like Arma's overuse of 'crack/pop' you can still tell the each distinct weapon apart from each other. Love it! Great work, I've been waiting for updated sounds ever since the sound guy was added to the Dev's.

I've read the 'About' section, I don't know how long ago it was written but PR already is a stable build. I also don't think any faction will ever be complete, there's always improvements that can be made and it takes a long time to implement assets based on changes IRL. 'v1.0' just seems like a vague goal the team had, the closer we get to it the less meaning it has IMO.

I also noticed what iAllex said but not only this, but also that there is no distance delay for the 30mm and the Hydras sounds. These are one of those things which are really abd for the atmosphere imo.

He means the slight delay between seeing the explosion and hearing it (basically realistic sound travel).

You're correct sir. The distant sounds were changed from 0.85 to 0.9. I spent a lot of time working on them. If my comp was actually working I'd upload some comparisons for you as a reward for your astute observation :D

They're also subject to change in the future, we'll keep working on improving the PR audio experience.

You sure kept your word, sounds amazing! Didn't quite expect things to go as far as you guys going to record sounds with the Royal Armoured Coprs though :)

Is it me (or Youtube, my computer) or is there a small sound glitch (I don't know the proper word, not even in finnish) in the new explosion effect? I noticed it in 3:46 and it seems to occur with every explosion. Similar to the sound that you hear in 3:37 when the scene changes. Whatever it is if it's even there it's not a big deal and I'm sure you can fix it, great work nonetheless!

Yeah that is what I noticed. The vehicle explosions still have the same sound on distance.

But the rest is just amazingly epic!

I love the sound of gunfire in the morning.

Great stuff so many games go for shiney gfx over good sounds sounds are much more imersive than gfx IMO and PR never fails to deliver.

Even arma2 mods that are dedicated to only sounds never get it right small arms louder than tank cannons in most cases but im spoiled by PR ;-)
