This map has been a WIP for 10 1/2 months now! I am trying to get it wrapped up and sent to the testers for its first birthday, but we will see how that turns out ;)

BAMYAN PROVINCE [WIP]

Name: Bamyan Province
Size: 2km
Theatre: Afghanistan
Factions: US ARMY (Placeholder for NZDF) vs Taliban
Gamemodes: Insurgency
Focus: Light Infantry/Guerrilla Warfare

The map is based on the NZDF deployment in Bamyan Province, Afghanistan. The scenario is set in the very near future, after New Zealand have increased their contribution to the war. In this scenario the conflict has recently sparked up again after Taliban attacks on coalition helicopters, and the local church. This has led the New Zealand troops stationed in Bamyan to mobilize in reaction to the new Taliban offensive.

I have chosen to use the US army as the current placeholder because there are US Army personnel stationed at Kiwi base with the New Zealand troops.

Here is a little update on what i've been working on lately :D

This is an updated minimap which shows the new mountain range i have sculpted. This is strayed from the real terrain, but adds more variety and gives a better feel of the overall province of Bamyan. It also helps to break up the map quite a bit.

I've done some more work on KiwiBase. It is quite highly detailed, and now features a multi storied TOC bunker.

Recently this small village in the west was added, it provides a good scene for CQC fighting when troops descend upon it from the mountains :D

Here is the small town on the North of the map. It is terraced up the side of a hill, and is quite a challenge to assault. There is a market, a school, a church, and a hidden cave system nearby so this town will deffinately be the setting for some bruta fighting. Or so i hope!

We will finish up with some images of Radio Relay Marlboro, which is the late FOB Moana. I have made some pretty big changes to the Relay in the last few weeks. It has a totally new entrance, and a revamped main entrance. I have also added a lot more detail to it.

That doesn't help at all, seeing how the map isn't finished and you don't even supply criticism he could work with. From me though its an overall great idea but could use some touching up, also I believe in one of the pictures the anti-tank gun is facing a wall?

It is a very good start but as said before, can use some more work, like the hils in the last screenshot
"taliban valley" looks like they need some mote attention to give them a more reallife look. But its a WIP and I think it will turn out really nice! Keep up the good work :thumbsup: HangMan

Looks cool. Nice balanced map, although there is plenty of space where the Taliban may succumb to the long-range fire of Blufor, the hills offer great advantages to the taliban even without having longer-range weapons.

Caches would be rather hard to assault if you had to do it uphill, is what I'm getting at. Well it's still a WIP but it looks great!

He's yet to hear a some of the Dev's advice. Its more of a WIP right now. Hes done allot of the leg work of building areas of interest, which is the major first step. And when the time comes we will get him to add a few more things. I know when I was non-dev I thought I was so close some many time only to end up push it farther and farther. For example the Korengal you play today was quite boring when I first thought I was done ;-)

Thanks for the feedback so far. This is really just an early taste. No percentage of completeness as i said in the OP. Still got a long way to go though :p

This map is not complete. I'm doing a lot more work on it now that its coming into the christmas holidays, so we'll see how that goes. At the moment however there is no estimated completion date.'

Looking good so far, especially some of the hill terrain.

Althought I do think that some of the hills could use a bit more cover. Such as some rocky type stuff, not just the odd tree here and there.

Defianitly coming along well, looking foward to playing it :-D

I am currently adding in the cover to the hills. Until now i hadn't started it hence why people were complaining about lack of cover hehe. Might treat you guys too a screen when its done :p

Funny you should say this, i started the map with a 2km Korengal in mind :p However that is not the case at present and will hopefully not be the case for the final map.

I like open maps With long draw distances, Say Archer for example, in some places on the map, it not uncomon to have a fire fight last for more then 10 minites, Which is totally awesome.

So i aprove on the direct this map is heading towards, Just include lots of really good cover.

Its WIP, for now it looks a bit vanilla-ish, but the overall concept is very cool.

get your inspiration from korengal and achers ( i believe your map is a mix of both styles?)

Looks nice, you could add some static landmarks like those Buddha that were carved out of the mountain.

Yea sorry guys bandwidth fail. I have not exceeded it yet i get the error :( So i am going to need to contact the photobucket people, or move to a better provider. Sorry for the temporary fail haha. You guys love my pics so much it must have taken up my a lotted bandwidth, thats the only rational explanation i can think of lol. Aparently it ticks over on the 10th (today) so either it will come back soon, or its going to stay stuffed until 10th January. I'll have a talk to the photobucket people about it :p

It looks to me like the ingame resolution and graphic settings is set to low on these pictures (jagged edges on chairs is very visible etc). Setting everything on high and using your monitors native resolutions is a good idea before posting screens, as that is how most people will play the game. It will also make everything look better and you can just change it back to what ever settings your computer can handle once your finished. Good luck with the mapping!

From my experiences pr doesn't run on Full High video settings. Especially not on my low end PC. Please don't hate on those of use with out top end pc's ;) Thanks for the feedback though :D

I always think that sets a good precedent for guerilla warfare, they must retreat when fired on with full force whereas presently sometimes Taliban appear to be better armed.

I would expect to fight them like a rabid dog, they are most dangerous in their mobility however thats just my opinion, thanks for a look at your map :)

This was of initial concern to me aswell. I intended for the base to be under sniper fire for the duration for the game, hence i put a lot of defensive structures in. You cannot see them all in detail from the high shot ;) this is good as it is harder to determine where the sangars and bunker are etc.

The base will be easy to shoot into, so the NZDF will have to act smart when moving around in the base. I have made the base almost immune to VBIED's i hope :p So should hopefully balance out nicely.

I am really looking forward to seeing if the guerilla style warfare plays out well. I have tried to make a map where it will be really fun to play as the OPFOR, as we already have a bunch of maps that have L337 BLUFOR. This could be a nice change in gameplay scenery.

No the NZDF will not be in 0.9. I realise there is a lot of confusion over this with all the new highlights that contain 0.9 content. This map will possibly be finished by the time 0.9 is out, it will not be in the release.

The NZDF team are aiming to get a full working build done by this time next year. Community factions take a very long time to make. The ADF have been going for two years. The reason for it taking so long is that there are only a small core group contributing a large amount of content, and when we have to go away for periods of time it slows the team down. Also majority are high school students which means during the school year their contribution is a lot lower.

Hope that gets everyone on the same wave length as me :D

Looks good so far. I hope you can keep it up, because it seems you have a long way ahead of you before this will be a good PR map. (It seems quite empty)
On a sidenote: A church in Afghanistan? Have you found any evidence of there actually being a single church? I know they were not alowed under the taliban regime, and 98 % of the afghans are muslims. Anyways, it just seems very unrealistic (imo) that a small mountain village would have a church.

I like it, only one thing I dislike, everyone always forget too make a outer ring's on Fob's and bases.
Almost every base I have been had a huge outer ring preventing enemy's to get close or mortars/rpg's to get shot at.. Maybe make it on a smaller scale at main bases. at least far enough to prevent enemy's to trow Molotov's in.

Caves and tunnels would be great! Exciting to play as BLUFOR and finding a cave/tunnel which need to ble cleared out and you dont know where it leads and what you'll find! :D

or playing as insurgent, hiding in there with grenade traps and stuff.. :mrgreen:

Trees look realistic to me outside of the green zone.
Lots of trees = hell for blufor
No cover = hell for insurgents

Only problem I can see is a few well placed SAW's totally locking down the map.

The view distances are HUGE and there is hardly any natural cover. Taliban won't stand much of a chance by the looks of things.

I've recently made some texture changes to the color and detail maps to reflect what Bamyan is like in mid-winter. Should be a cool new twist to the afghan theatre :D

There is another Iraqi-USMC map being made, the Tigris River one I think. I agree though, would be good to see the USMC represented properly in Afghanistan.

Take Helman V2 and rename is Op Moshtarak haha, and throw the marines in there in place of the brits... too easy

Marines could be the placeholder faction on this map, however, US Army special forces and regular troops are stationed at Kiwi Base in Bamyan, thus making it a little more realistic for them to be the placeholder faction :)

They are still there, thats just a quick minimap taken in the editor. Did not do any thing to make it look better simply just clicked reload lol. Its purpose is to show the new snow.

hehe not showing off the caves yet. But they will be unique from any caves currently in pr. Being a caver myself i have thrown some interesting stuff in that will engage players in some problem solving the first time they come to them :D

Might be able to put up some pics of the town soon...

There is the default lowdetail applied to the brown, it needs a custom one i think to make it unique like wilkinson said. The brown area is the farm soil, but because its winter nothing will grow there.
