[Map] Feyzabad, Afghanistan [WIP]
Updated 12/08

Features

Real area of operation (real data used)
Recreation in spirit of the area
Blufor(undecided) vs Taliban
Hard MilSim gameplay
WIP 200 to 500m cap radius in each town (Effects OPFOR ability to spawn vehicles, Weapons, and RP)
River that travels from on side to the other with little towns here and there.
High mountain areas with small towns scattered
Snowy areas
Military Airports (BLUFOR Air power only spawns after "Radio Free Afghanistan" is capped, which is not an easy flag)
BLUFOR teamwork will rely on airpower (Transportation & CAS)

I really like that you have kept cappable flags with associated bonuses as well as the standard insurgency in Korengal, looking forward to it here as well.

looks nice.
what i would like to see is more trees on the hills (like fools road) and 2 apcs for the non militia/insurgent faction only.
the other faction should have quite a few rpg spawns based at their spawnpoints and only jeeps with machineguns.
important would be that the mobility for both of the forces should be a lot higher than say fools road. choppers and jeeps, and a lot of jeeps for the insurgents/militia too. fools road is such an infantry gaming killer, so i think that there should be a lot of vehicles that spawn quite regularly (for both sides).

but i have faith in you ;D

Well if I keep to the real area (very few trees) the maps running at 90 FPS for me. And thats with new statics that have no LOD's. But its way to early to be doing FPS test.

I have new images but cant get to them right now.

Rhino and I have way different mapping views and skills. Its not a competition. In fact with out the wide range of mappers the levels would be boring and repetitive.

Fox, imho, specific bonusses granted by capping flags is next generation maps I tell you. Commanding Kashan has never been more pain than it is today, mainly because there is no actual reason for commanding offensively. It is just a bloody huge cost of tickets.

If I could get specific bonusses for attacking a point succesfully (vehicles, tickets, arty, free bunker - whatever) it would a) give a hole new dimension of gameplay (especially for the commander, whos current job is a little dull sometimes) and b) it would for the first time make actual sense to attack instead of figting in a passive aggresive manner.

Please, please, make my dreams true.

but i hope destructable statics are avoided on this map to prevent over complicated processing.

i'm hoping for a lot of steep 90º climbs that require ropes <3

Much better? Well if Korengal laggs on your crappy computer you might want to stay away from this map :wink: I wont be skimping on this map, and with draw distance out to 750+ Plus a large amount of overgrowth in the valley Korengals 450d will be the least of your worries.

Dont think for a sec I wont cram in as much detail that I can. :razz: Not even a desert is flat and bare of objects.

just have to say that korengal is a work of art. i love how there are deathtraps you can step in if you're not careful. treacherous terrain really adds a lot to the firefights, in my opinion. well done!

Beautiful.. Stunning.. This is truley amazing for early into the build process

OPFOR will be a Insurgent force that will relies on holding towns to keep assets and spawn points. The actual gameplay modes are still way to far out to be locking down or even talked about

Just so you know, my mother was walking by (She's a geologist who has been studying Hindukush, Himalaya area all her life), and saw the map and immediately latched on to it.

She said that a braided sedimentation of the river (on the NW corner of the map) after a bend never occurs and was asking where the satellite image was from (she didn't know it was a game map).

Either way, after i told her it was for PR, she told me that in order to be geologically accurate, the braided characteristic you have on the northern end of the river should actually be on the southern end, if the river is flowing south.

Also, snow capped peaks, or the snow line, occur over larger distances, so seeing the peak, snow line, and river all within a 4km * 4km area is strange.

Guess you would need a German Faction in game first ;-) In fact I believe its the Dutch that are there. So far I've gathered its been the US Army, Germanys, and Dutch. But again, its so far out that i'm not even thinking about it.

i would like to see this kinda stuff in feyzabad. imagine a really steep hill with an old watchtower fortification that holds a cache, and the only way to get up is by rope on the cliffs that looks like this.

Or by helicopter but that would be hazardous since you'd probably take fire.

Just another note, I think it would great if you added some destroyed soviet tanks from back when the Soviet Russia and Afghanistan went to war scattered about the map, primarily in the valley. It would give it a real nice touch.

I agree, I find insurgency to be full of lonewolves and an excuse for people to yell Allah snackbar alot :lol: a militia faction (taliban) that can set rally points would be much better imo, nice map btw

As far as i know Dutch armed forces are only active in Uruzgan province, Kabul and Kandahar Airfield.

Wow, I didn't realise that there was such an extensive amount f nations involved in Afghanistan, I knew there was a fair amount but I wasn't expecting the Scandinavians and Eastern Europeans to be there.

I don't have a problem with it being insurgency at all, I think the whole lonewolf attitude toward them is dying out, there was big attitude change toward them after .8 I think.

Dont worry guys, we understand that a map of this size wont work well with the current insurgency set up. And as my first post states were working on a new flavor of insurgency for this map. But thats about all I can say about it, again its a long way out and I doubt you will see anything about it for awhile.

As far as factions we wont be making that choice for a long time. The map has to be built, lightmapped, working first :-D

Just a side note: In reality there isent really any insurgent/taliban activity in Feyzabad. The only really fighting there have been up north after the invasion has been in Kunduz with the Germans and Norwegians. And still, nothing major like in the east and south.

Keep in mind it was just posted to show who is in Feyzabad, everything else doesnt really matter for this map. And the information that the German Military is there seems to be right, so the map serves its purpose.

All these Afghan/Herrick maps are absolutely fantastic. You really need to write a story line of some kind or do some form of Op Herrick campaign type thing, keep up the good work.

PR will most likly never have a story line. The reason is a story only limits what we can create. In a nerdy voice "Well according to the story the MEC never attacked the US...blaaa...blaaa.." youget the point :-P

I have to report some bad news guys, after a few weeks of testing and reading tech discussions the bf2 engine cant handle 4km maps with the vertical aspects I have. Works great in the editor but once in game the terrain acts totally different. This means I will have to shrink it down to a 1k or 2k. Still need to do a bunch of testing. But too much work has been done to scrap it.

The terrain warps way too much. The warping is where say a cliff far away will look one way, but when you get closer it will morph into the correct terrain. Same thing happens on larger maps when you see a player or tank floating but this is even more drastic with the elevation changes I have. The outcome would be a player could be shooting you but from your point of view you would just see terrain. This wouldn't be fun or a PR quality map.

So the idea of the map is not dead, just needs to take a different path. The good thing with shrinking it down is I will be able to put more detail into the map kinda in the same way Korengal was packed with detail. Which at the end of the day might be a good thing.

Pros:
Same idea but smaller
Insurgency will work better
Map still comes out

Cons:
A10 or equivalent support will most likely need to be removed
Maps not scrapped
Hit the bottom with the BF2 engine

Sorry to all those that were dreaming of a map like this, I'm not happy about it. But at least we know where the limit is :-D

Cant you make hills and rocks with statics? I mean building the map with static rock blocks and hills would make it possible to render things in the distance.

All you need it a large pack of static terrain if you know what i mean.

Sure it would take more time then usual but if it works they way i think it will it will be worth it.

If not, then this map will just be as Korengal :(

i'm a little busy with korengal fixes, so I might not be posting any changes with this map for a while. But you all know you'll be the first to know when it does work :-D

Interesting, the same thing occurs on Kashan (hovering soldiers that are actually behind a small hill) but I thought it was because the hills were made using the Randomize tool meaning there's tons of little peaks and holes that blend into each other at distance into something more level.

yeah that morphing of terrain is something that can be seen in vanilla maps, too. like at the base of a parallell wall, the terrain kind of wants to reach up along the wall and smoothens out when you approach.
it's even more obvious at a map of this magnitude ;(

I did a sh*t load of experimenting before v0.8 was released to try and cut this problem down or remove it, but ye managed to turn the default terrain LODs as such:

Doing some tests i have made it a bit better. This is what it comes down to. I need to make sure that any areas that have a step in the terrain needs to be a wider step. Plus lowering the height value has helped a lot.

So like i said its not dead, and it wasent going to be released anytime soon. so I got some time to MAKE it work. :-D

PR pushes the BF2 engine that, and you guys need to realize that. On maps that Lag we dont TRY to make them that way. Were working with DICE's tools and systems and we can only do so much in a short time.

The maps max height was set to 550 (more or less) by cutting it down to 350 most the problems went away.

While reviewing the cliffs I was wondering that since it is a ground topography problem if using statics like boulders and such and moving the actual ground texture cliff back would help? The only other option I could think of would be to make cliff static objects that could be placed on steep angles like those and effectively 'move out' the cliff to line up with the road, while leaving actual space under the static for the topography.

To be fair, Korengal could still use some optimization. After all, people run Muttrah with no problems, even Baracuda and Tad Sae, but Korengal seems to have a grudge against smooth running.

While I have no pics at the moment the map is coming along. Most of the warping issues are gone. The next big thing to do is create the villages and paint some of the land. The real areas not as dirt and sand as it looks.
