Here it is guys, finally after over a years work, here is Muttrah City v2.0!

For thous of you who never played the first Muttrah City in the early versions of PR, the map focuses on a Amphibious Air Assault via the USMC on the Capital of Oman, Muttrah City. The MEC are well dug into the city and it will take lots of street to street, hard urban combat to push them out and fully gain control While the MEC on the other hand, providing they can keep on there feet and shoot down the incoming choppers, can push the USMC right back into the sea.

Now I will say there was more I wanted to do with this map, and although yes this is finished for v0.8, I do plan on working on this map more for v0.85 and later to add the detail and things I wanted to but due to deadlines I could not do everything I wanted here. Never the less, the map is still VERY playable as seen in stress testing, loads of fun and dose not feel "unfinished" for the most part.

its as close to 1:1 scale as I could get it, it may in fact be a little larger than the real life one hehe but it is very close I can tell you that much :)

That carso ship does look weird indeed. Nothing is holding the containers from falling out on the sides. Is there actually any ships that look like that? Shouldnt there be something to hold the containers in shape?

I can't wait to see some story-like moments on this map, I can only imagine the possibilities.

Rhino, I admire your work, very much. Muttrah has always had an amazing unique relatively classy middle-eastern feel to it (Even in v0.5 and before, referring to mostly the inner city [especially the park, the mosque]), and seeing all these new statics and touches to the map make it feel lived-in as well as very classy and urban. Not to say some of the other DEV's work should go unnoticed, but this is a map most of the community has been teased about since it's removal and announcement of a revamp after v0.5, and this gives Muttrah a new, beautiful, look.


And I cannot WAIT to destroy it.

On English, all I can say is something like: epic, awesome, fantastic, amazing,...
After almost two and a half years in PR, not even in my sweetest PR dreams I couldn't imagine that some map like that could be done for PR.

This map will rule the PR world!

Funny how MEC and USMC assault the city from the same direction.

I propose a 32p version, where US starts in Docks and fights down south towards the fort in case the 64 ends up like 0.5 Basrah or 0.5 Muttrah v1 (ie. noobs prevent the entire US team to get off the carrier)

Also a Counter-Attack version along with AAS wouldn't hurt, something with a bit more assets for US and a load of armor for MEC as reinforcement when CA starts.

lol, I usually can't reach shore if we have noobs on our team. The boats get instantly shot by 50 cals, and the noob pilots screw the whole team. That and the squad kick hack by thespermcube and wumwuts.

Yes. You can only have one type of "artillery" settings in a map and if each maps are going to have different settings it make sense to indicate which one is going to have which one.

Unless the devs found away around that, but it would surprise me.

I can answer a few of those. The seperate watchtower I didnt make enterable, as it would hardly be used on its location (perhaps it was more accesible in the past). The only use you can put it to is if you drop a sniper team there by heli, other than that its mostly there becaues its there in real life.

The fort however is another story :) if I remember correctly there are 18 seperate stair cases ;) (without the stairs leading up the the fort itself) some outside, but you can imagine that its enterable from those numbers.
4 levels of the main tower is at the players disposal, 3 levels of the entrance/guard tower, one row of gun slits is accessible from the small tower and the main tower.

The two spawn buildings provide access to the two main towers (big one and ruined one).

Apart from that there are several gun slits available for defence along the walls.

I think its fairly safe to say that the fort will be nearly impossible to take. MEC will most likely bleed out before it being taken. The best chance anyone has of taking it is by little bird insertion I think - still some tough fights inside the fort.

I have had too many rounds of the USMC getting raped on Muttrah.
i loved that, though.
a lot of rounds were only about getting into shore safely, dropping down into the water and going through that pipe.
i love fighting uphill.

its just a matter of lag with statics, but networkable objects, such as destructable buildings, there is a 1024 limit, but getting around 300 should be your max (mapper wise) because more will cause lag.

Also there is the ladder problem, more then 1024 ladders and whenever you climb it you will blow up the server.

hmm, I had to say something 'bout that.

I remember Muttrah V1 very well, good ol' time, remember the bloody AA thing next to the fountain ? Littlebirds used to crash in that area, was kinda fun. You could also find funny stuff to do with the Forklift, glad to see it back in .8.

And now, Rhino is back and strikes again with MUTTRAH V2 (omg my hands are shakcingzzz...)! Man, this sh*t is awesome, I couldn't even dream of a better map, that absolutely BRILLIANT.

You've done a great job Rhino (and all your slaves), keep it up, 'till someone discover you work for EA (and BF heroes for sure).

there are vehicles that dont respawn on many maps in v0.756, and releases before that. you just dont notice them that much :p

Reason why the Attack huey dont respawn, is cos that's just the initial air support for the map, help soften up the MEC in the early stages since they get loads of transport and able to build bunkers, firebases etc. The Cobra at the very start would be kinda gey, and with no chopper there all you would have is 4 guys waiting for the cobra to spawn :p

My friend used to live in Muscat, so I'm sure he's seen that area. Pretty cool how accurate it seems :P. I'll have to ask him what he thinks, though I think it will be realistic enough for his liking :P.

no limit regarding the number of buildings, but its really a performance thing, since most objects require lightmaps etc, that can lag a user out a lot. I did hit the max limit of ladders in a map (255) thou :p

Great work, I'm wondering from your testing is there an equal amount of USMC wins to MEC wins?

I only took in around 6 rounds of stress testing (ie, full players in the server) and it did seem 50:50, providing USMC got good pilots, they would win, if they got bad, they would most likly loose, but its much easier for USMC to win now than the old that's for sure, the main problem with the old as just not enough LZs and generally too small etc.

Can't fully tell until we get the pubbies in there, thou I'm confidant it will play out very well 8-)

like I said before, took me around a week to do the sun light in 3DsMax, then a guy from USI who had 10 PCs did the sky light for me (a batch on each PC) thou some got missed, so I had to spend around 4 days making a script for max so that it would not generate lightmaps for an object if lightmaps where already generated for them hehe. Then it took me around anouther day of lightmapping to get all the objects which where still missing :)

all in all, a fecking long time :p

Thou just sculpting the mountains and the rest of the terrain took me over a week too, thou that was in the early stages of the map hehe :)

the hueys will be vital for supply drops to be able to build bunkers / firebases around the city.

from the pictures it looks like they do have at least one

at main base they have 2 ZPU-4 AA guns for base defence, which from testing should work very effectively at taking out any chopper including the cobra (providing manned, which is the big catch :p) that tries to venture near the main, and with all the cover in the city, vodnic 50cals, hand held AA (MANPADS) and also deployable AA from bunkers, providing the MEC have there act together its not too hard to take down the cobra, thou the cobra is vital from testing for USMC.

I dont have a problem with the object editors list, its pretty easy to navigate. Now to navigate though all the objects in max, now that was hard, took 5mins to do a search for a object name as it searches all hidden lods etc :p

may get a screenshot of how it all looked in max, I setup a pretty advanced lighting system in fact along the GI lighting theory :p

ye, car is pretty crappy hehe, me and cheese where basically see how much work it would take to make a simple car, and it was quite abit. Hope to make some new cars for the next version since the streets need them, providing its feasible, main problem with cars is they are very poly heavy and require large LMs = lots of lag :p

ye, been brought up a few times, they are in fact quite clean, the top ones, but the bottom ones are not green, but in fact black for some reason I aint 100% sure on, but would require me to make 2 types of rock armour, and didn't think it was all worth it.

the deployable AA wont be the ZPU4 guns, it will be thous lock on AA stand things, with limited ammo so they wont tare though choppers like a ZPU-4 dose.

but ehhh, without exporting the weapon again we can't make it so it has to be "assembled" as such.

I hope you didn't decide to make the Docks spawn one like on old Muttrah, damn thing made it impossible for the USMC to recapture them @.@

If MEC get combat around the fort, they should fall back into the fort, or loose. Simple.

you mean its unbalanced to the USMC? trust me, its not, it depends on how good the USMC team are, if they are good, and use there assets effectively, they will most likly win yes. But if they dont use there assets effectively, they will simply get crashed by even a crap MEC team. having thous trucks, land support etc makes a huge difference, more than you would think.

LAV 25s have a 5min respawn, but it takes them also 5mins to get from the carrier to shore, then probably a drive to combat.

Bleed happens for the USMC once MEC capture all land flags and are in the water, slow light bleed thou.

MEC have a light bleed once the city centre flags have been capped, and once south city is capped, they get a slightly harder bleed, fort capped pure out right win for USMC.

But you do not need to worrie about MEC being the underdogs.

Simply awesome! I love stuff based on real locations. It draws you in and elevates the game to a higher level of realism, epicness and authenticness. I greatly admire mappers who undertake such a task. I have my own experience with such a task so I know what it feels like to finally be done. Don't get me wrong, maps not based (even loosely) on actual locations can still be fantastic as well provided they get the atmosphere/vibe of the region they are depicting right. Anyway congratulations. And thanks to the many people contributed to get it done quicker than it otherwise would have been. Bask...relax..., job well done.

Oman, which Muttrah / Muscat is the capital of, is a VERY rich country, it has as much chance of being overrun by insurgents as Rome dose...

The way I personally see it is the MEC have invaded Oman in there push of control for the whole of the Middle East, and as a result, NATO forces are now trying to get rid of its occupiers (the MEC) and return it back to the Oman people. Thou really you could put 100s of storyline ontop of it. One thing we do no for sure in BF2, the MEC are in Oman since there is a map called "Gulf of Oman".

they have a 5min respawn time on them, providing they are manned before the cobra gets there, the cobra will be dead. the catch is as soon as you hear the cobra, you need to sprint there as fast as you can, but you can see the cobra in the fog before it can see you, so providing your in it, hes dead.

if they try to attack the car park of the fort like that they will just fail since there missiles will just strike the hill or the fort causing no to little damage. They will have to get into such a position as they would be able to be shot down before they can attack that area, yes I did think of all this stuff ;)

Well done Rhino... The transformation from RL to PR is simply beautiful and spot on accurate mate. Amazing job and your hard work and detail has paid off!!!! The gameplay on this map, especialy with the cobras attacking the city, is gonna be sweeeeet. All I can say is, if your MEC just dig in and pray to Allah.... Hoooah

I was going to let one of the other devs chip in here as they did the work on it but I'm tired of seeing this popping up all the time so mehh.

They are Mortar, Arty and JDAM. They indicate if the map has any of them or not, as you can see, muttrah has none.

ye, most things that are diffrent are mainly down to gameplay reasons, things like the smaller dock and the wave barker closer inland than r/l, so the carrier could be more out to sea and not so close in, the car park behind the fort, in r/l is a bunch of houses but needed a spawn area for the MEC vehicles etc. But its good to hear that from ppl who live/been there think its good :D

The fact that Muttrah have been brought back into PR has given me enough Spank Bank notes to last me years. The original Muttrah was the only reason I clocked up nearly 130 hours playing SP...Thats more than my MP campaign. But since it was about 95% on Muttrah I wasn't getting any help when going back online...until now.

Thanks to Rhino and anyone else involved for letting this uber map make its return. If the rest of 0.8 is a half as good as the orignal Muttrah then enjoy your first place spot in this years 'mod of the year'...If 0.8 Muttrah is better than the first, than god help us all because...

Rhino would have just divided by zero.

Let's hope there is an M82A1 Barrett stashed out there in some of these new maps. I'm sure the fog distance and some open streets approaching the docks would facilitate a rather nice coverage zone. Probably could use the firepower on a map like that, gotta' make those shots count with all the cover offered by buildings and houses.

We could do without the dual Uzi's though, a simple silenced M9 would be acceptable. No need to play Rambo though, because you can be hardcore and professional at the same time. That all depends on your skill and demeanor.

Kinda ironic to see an M98 on one particular map, but that's another issue.

It attracts the kind of idiot players that we DON'T want playing, and does not really add much of anything to the infantry element of the game... just another rambo kit... which we already have enough of.

Sniper roles in PR are destined for intel/recon work more than ever, and will be moving in that direction even further after v0.8... PR is NOT a sniper simulator, nor is BF2 a good engine to facilitate such a game, nor does any of the PR devs have any interest in making a sniper simulator. ArmA or some other game with proper ballistics would be a much better choice for all those die hard sniper wannabes....
