View Full Version : [Map] Sangin [WIP]

A meticulously planned 4km of Afghanistan based on extensive research taken from discussions with [R-DEV]UK_Force, video footage, photos and information gathered from the Helmand Exhibition at the National War Museum. Set mainly in an area of the Green Zone that follows the Helmand River through Sangin, the map includes Camp Bastion (the main base in the bottom left of the map - in RL Bastion is much further out in the same direction as it currently is in game so there will be a dome of death around it to prevent the Taliban forces getting near it in game, simulating the distance as best as possible). It also includes the Sangin MT (Main Town) FOB which has seen some of the most intensive fighting in the region. As you'll see, the FOB is modelled as accurately as I could get it, and bares more than a passing resemblance! It took AGES to make!! :???: 8)

Some key features include:


Overgrowth grass fields i.e. grass you can hide in


Compounds modelled from google images/video footage


Fields etc modelled from a combination of google images and video footage


Insurgency gamemode against a Taliban force (Insurgent models for the time being)


Realistic vehicles in operation i.e. for the British the Harrier, Apaches, Scimitars, an A-10 and Landrovers (the merlin will probably be used as a place holder until the game gets a chinook) Air assets are not confirmed, it will come down to balancing, ideally all those mentioned here will feature.

Cheers, I started this last July, about the time he was out there making it! :) But yeah, it provided some useful refs, particularly for some of the field ideas.

yep, like ranky has said hes been working on this map for some time now and wan't directly inspired by Ross Kemp in Afghanistan but it did provide with some really nice HD refs ;)

The map as you see it now will change alot from what you see it now too the time when its ingame, going to need alot of terrain work done still for the surrounding mouintins etc, all its textures will be terrain textures will be redone most likly and there are going to be lots of new, non destructible statics going to be made due to the fact the map has not even got anything like as many compounds as we hope to have in it, and its already at its max destructible items limit thou we do plan to put in as many destructible objects as possible in the map :D

The vehicle layout ranky has posted above may not be the final due to gameplay issues thou we will see how things go, in the end we want to have this map as close to reality as possible so we will try and use as many realistic assets as we have available to us in the map, that also keep it fair for both sides :D

If you want to visualize what this map will be like to play on, just think Al Basrah, but spread over the size of Kashan/Qinling with no city, and lots of villages / compounds in it which contain the ammo chaches / objectives :D

and no eddie, the scimitar cant swim, its just fording the river :p

Wow, looks insanely awesome!Some of the screens remind me a bit of WWII Online, just modernized :P Love seeing fields, trees, bushes, etc stretching way out as far as you can see. Beautiful map!

hopefully the insurgetns will have liek veitcogn styl efirign postions liek teh yod in real life (heard that from a mate who servied in afganistian) for one reason so that the air woudl then coem into play to flush them out becasue if u did that it woudl stop the Advantage of ARmour for theUK troops and make ti harder for them to ingage teh insurgents.

The ammo caches will be located in the compounds, and will be in require ground troops to move in to destroy them (air assets will not be able to destroy them as this would make it far too easy for the British. If they are in destroyable buildings they will be in underground basements).

btw, for anyone who doesn't realise this is Qinling/Kashan sized, hence 4km 8)

Just one more thing any chance we could have a British skin update just for this map, the current ones are abit clean.
Having skins with rolled up sleaves,scruffy hair dusty weapons soldiers with just T shirts on under the Osprey armour just general stuff like that 8)

yeah I agree with you 100%, Rhino. To actually take a strategic approach with insurgency maps using guerrilla warfare tactics will prove to be VERy effective. Katarn and I have done this on several occasions while testing and not only is it effective, but very frustrating for the other team -the desired efffect! :)

hardly, with the new way jets work, planes can only do so much without spotters :D

As well as the fact that the taliban will have dug outs to hide in like they do in r/l and the map is huge so finding the enemy will be soo much harder.

on Al Bas v0.5 all the A-10 had to do was drop his entier bomb load in the NVCP as there was always insurgents there, and get 10 kills.

Muttrah will feature the USMC.... the reason why this map is british is because the British at the moment and have been for god knows how long been fighting very heavily in the Sangin valley.

we will see but think it may be abit too much with already the taliban up aginst jets and choppers killing them which they have limited defence against, and putting a JDAM aswell is a little OTT, but we will see, not going to fully rule it out yet.

Looks Amazing!! I really like overgrowth and how the base and villages are placed.Really give you the feeling of Afghanistan.
I like static bushes which give you great hideout from long range firefights.

I would definitely cut down on the amount of air assets available. Not for balance purposes, but if you remember 0.5 Al Basrah, the brits had literally half the team waiting at the airfield for a Cobra, A10, blackhawk etc. to spawn. Even with the current version of Kashan, a lot of people still tend to hang around the airfield for something that flies to spawn.

If anything, I'd go with one fixed wing aircraft (Be it the Harrier or A10, I'd prefer the Harrier), and one rotary wing attack aircraft (Apache). Not too sure on that however, as it seems like a rotary wing attack aircraft can be very self sufficient in taking down Insurgent/Taliban caches. Though considering the size of the map, transport choppers would definitely be a lot more useful.

The crates are undercover (underground) they cant be shot by an chopper nor aircraft. So don't worry about that :)
An apache would definitively be useful on this map

Not really, it was always the plan to produce this Afgahn Map, Ross Kemps series is obviously, the latest hit for the PR Forums at the moment, as its been on the TV for ages on Sky One, and has already finished ??

Remember we have active British Soldiers on the Dev Team, and that Afghanistan is our latest Operational Theatre, hence its priority for Project Reality ??


We will have the Official British Army Server, running this 24/7 When we release it too !!!

I would definitely cut down on the amount of air assets available. Not for balance purposes, but if you remember 0.5 Al Basrah, the brits had literally half the team waiting at the airfield for a Cobra, A10, blackhawk etc. to spawn. Even with the current version of Kashan, a lot of people still tend to hang around the airfield for something that flies to spawn.

If anything, I'd go with one fixed wing aircraft (Be it the Harrier or A10, I'd prefer the Harrier), and one rotary wing attack aircraft (Apache). it was the US on Al Basrah in v0.5 ;)

but ehhh, fixed wing aircraft are used every day in Afghanistan for air support as the Arty dont have the range to support most of the combat in Afghanistan so fast air is the best way to get the support that the troops need. Basically every video you see out there you can find will show some kind of air support in it at one point or another from fixed wing aircraft, the Apaches from what I've seen are mainly used for escorting and on missions they have been tasked to support before hand.

As for players hanging around at the main, I think it will become less and less as jets become useless without spotters really, epically if they cant dog fight like they wont be able to do on this map. I would say maybe no A-10's, but definitely include atleast an Apache (or 2), and some transport helo's. If this becomes the new Kashan (in terms of size) i hope to see a a good number of merlins, and landrovers. Would be loads of fun to sit behind a dirt burm, with some folliage, and just light people up with the .50 cal.

As you can see there has been (and still is) a lot of work and dedication gone into this WIP Map, over 3 months so far, and we are going to get this right and thouroughly test it to make sure it plays well too. ;-)


As has already been said, there are no CR2's in Afgahn, and we must take into account the balance of actual "gameplay" .

I think the A-10 shouldn't be in there, maybe an F-16 since it can't rape infantry as much but can still drop it's bombs on targets which is what fast air does, drop bombs. This would keep some flyboys happy and would keep the infantry happy too.

also ranky's going to have to wait a little before he can do much more to his compounds, in fact alot are going to have to be redone as hes already reached the max networkable limit (ie, max destructible) then we are going to need to crate new, undestructible statics to be able to make as many compounds as we would like :)

I realise talking about the assets is possibly a futile gesture at this point until we see more of the map but I'd like to make a suggestion.

It is to do with jets. This is a large map with infantry combat emphasised more than on Qinling and Kashan (which is a good thing) but still, I think putting in transport helicopters, lots of vehicles, attack heli's AND ground attack aircraft is going to mean British infantry will be pushed to the side as you will get the usual compliment of retards waiting at the airfield for their favourite toys to spawn instead of fighting as an infantryman (like a real man, OO-RAH!)

But thats not to say the Brits shouldn't get these toys and at least Tanks, APC's and transport heli's provide more readily accessible support for your average guy on the ground. But I think putting in a jet pushes things over the edge a bit. The very nature of the map and the enemy means that a jet will either:

A) have nothing to do because the Insurgents have no big obvious targets and can easily hide

or

B) It will dominate the opposing team. What do the Insurgents have? SA-7's? Oh please...

So my point is, a jet has no place being in this map from a gameplay perspective. But they are used in this theatre of war so that doesn't mean I think they shouldn't be represented. What I suggest is an airstrike option for a commander, similar to a JDAM but on a much smaller scale and much more regular in its appearances. This can represent a ground attack plane doing its bombing run perfectly and eliminates any extra people waiting for a plane to spawn. In regular big combined arms maps planes have to deal with opposing aircraft, lots of targets and plenty of AA...they have a lot to do and are justified in their inclusion. The insurgents don't provide any of this so whats the point of effectively WASTING a player slot (or more)? Would it be possible to have a low poly plane model spawn and fly over when the airstrike hits as a visual acknowledgment?

Regardless of what the devs think of this idea I have to say the map looks bloody nice. Having watched footage of the war the map does LOOK like Afghanistan. Beautiful foliage and undergrowth, simple yet accurate and effective sky, great work, I mean it.

i atleast a couple transport choppers would be good, if it's going to be the size of kashan. That's my biggest beef with kashan that if you lose your blackhawks, you're really limited in the transport element with the lack of hummer's/vods.

it's not like the landrovers/hummers/vodniks are godly overpowered. they're just good if used right.

I'm really glad to see the first giant map that isn't just an expanse of desert, foliage, or buildings, but a tasteful mix of the three. All it can do is add to the enormity of it all, unlike the confining effect of the PLA and Militia maps like Qinling and the Mestia trilogy.

i think jets should definitly be added, as from what i can understand you can laser designate any area to be bombed. so even though the insurgents may not have many big targets to designate, you can designate an area on the ground where they are concentrated, or maybe a building they are hiding in, and the flyboys can drop a bomb on that area and it would be majorly realistic. and please please dont add challengers to this map, im almost 100 percent certain that there are no challengers in afghanistan.

As well as giving a good feel as to what life in Sangin is like, there are some more excellent pics and maps of the area. If it is a realistic map, I'll be running around streets I know well :grin:

Pathfinder is the parachute regiments reconnaissance force, your better off putting in 2 or 3 para battalion. Blue flash for 2 para, green flash for 3 para.

its very common for the US to do air strikes for the UK ground forces. i guess it all depends on what coalition assets are available.

yep, they pick the closest available air asset to them at the time which is on patrol, which is most of the time a US asset like a F-15 thou lots of times RAF, dutch and loads of other aircraft are used.

You'll be able to hide in the grass (because the grass is overgrowth not undergrowth), the shrublines, the ditches, trenches, hedgelines, walls in some of the fields, and a massive number of compounds. So yeah, they'll be plenty of places to take cover, as well as some more exposed areas which you can avoid as infantry by sticking to the hedgerows, trenches etc.

Really nice looking.

On the picture of the scimitar on the hill, looked like corner observation posts were missing, but on a zoomed out photo of the base I can see them, just different ones, or have they been added? Would like to see a close up of them if they're new.

The guy crouching in the road, with the telephone poles makes the road look quite wide.

Other then those two things, looks amazing, seriously can't wait to see it in game. :D
