View Full Version : [Map] Militia Series [WIP]

Hey there eveyone.. so the idea here is that I am building a three map series that are all connected geographically.

Hopefully each primary type of combat will be represented...

much like star wars i created the last one first... (assault on mestia)

in the next release the second map in the series will be released..

this map will be know as "Fool's road' and will be a mix of infantry and APC combat in a large (2sq km) map..

the map is mainly forest and rolling hills and some screens have been posted already and news posted..

The last map in the series will be the middle map.. it will be called "Dragon Fly" and is shaping up to be one hell of an urban combat map.. Im gonna let you guys hang on that map for a while as its still have a way to go...

BUT.. thought id put the stitched minimaps up in my journal just to show you guys im hard at work and let you suppose as much as you like regardin the details of the maps... hehe..

Awesome i love the idea of that. Is like a campagn, but i have a suggest for you, make the war start in the middle then if militia win we pass on the map below...and if UK win we passe on Mestia :D

i think that would be hard to implement... maybe it would work in the PRT but not on a random pub server.

ehhh for a start, the middle one is dragonfly hehe, and ehhh, ye it in facts fit perfectly, apart from the terrain colour, I chopped off the corner of AoM's heightmap and merged into Dragonflys so it would be a good match ;)

its something else ;)

Well done, only took 6hrs with a few hints :p

ye, AoM has a diffrent "magnetic north" from the other 2 maps, which is kinda odd :p

na, it is the top on every map, and your compass on the bottom of the screen, in choppers and jets etc says so also ;)

na, cos then the other 2 maps magnetic north would be incorrect :p

its not a issue, I was just wondering if any one would notice :)

well i noticed before but didnt say anythign thinking maybe it would be like Militia making an offensive agains the british to drive them out moving from North --> south, but eh, thought it was working as intended :)

o well. you figure it out. cause.. that's what we play your game for.

Seems to me that unless anyone is a serious topographical geography nut they won't actually realise once the maps are being played seperately that the south-western corner of Mestia is 90' out of kilter with the north-eastern corner of Dragonfly lol.

It's only when you see all three overheads like that that the problem leaps out at you...

...oh, and I noticed that Mestia was rotated through 90' within about 2 seconds of looking at the picture, sorry R! :p

why you say that? only AoM dont really fit cos of its colour textures and uses diffrent tree models but thats cos taxi didnt have me to help out before :p

AoM and Dragonflys heightmaps fit in very snugly, I did it myself, only thing thats really diffrent is the colour like said above, and maybe tree postions.

Fools Road and Dragonfly use more or less the same climate and textures, with a few minor tweaks here and there, the only real diffrence between the two are the lighting that make it look very diffrent from a minimap.

apart from that, they are pretty well a good match considering this is only a game engine.

actually the maps are geographically linked.. i mean...as in the terrains link up to one another...


Now...TBH of course they are not carbon copies of one another BUT they will look close enough for it to be fun...


another thing you have to consider is that each minimap is in a differents day / weather etc.. so the lighting is slightly different...

The point is to produce a series of maps with meaning. as opposed to all the ones offs..


As for the lack of compass alignment.. damn you got me there... put that on your list of things Irontaxi did wrong.. hehe

anyway..point is fun right... its not like i forgot to put any nipples on a major weapon or anything...ggggeeeessszzz...

and rhino...stay out of my journal! haha...

Well you're clearly in need of some kind of support from Rhino if you think that weapons have nipples? *blink* :p

It looks gorgeous, and I love the concept - just can you get the server license updated so that servers are forced to play all three consecutively, please? ;) :p

true if you look at it trough a mappers point of view, all i have is a crappy paint drawing :P any way what i also wanted to point out is that mestia is flipped, will this be a change in .7 because now mestia makes no sence (compass wise)

dout it for v0.7, would take alot of work, maybe for a later release.

Course it makes sense... you'll never be on a server and roaming over all three maps at the exact same time, so you'll never notice that the compass is "out" by 90'. :p

It's only because there's an overlay of the maps like that that you can see anything. On the ground, on three different maps in three different rounds, well, it makes no difference to gameplay lol.

easy guys, just saying that the north will be the east (or so)

ok its hard to explain what i am saying but it is a good question on the end.

ok the NORTH in mestia is how it is now.

then you have the middle map having the north as the top.

Then you look at this and see how it makes no sense, becasue there is 2 different norths.

think about it is hard for me to explain, and what my actaul question is will mestia look how it is looking on the gegraphical pic or will it stay the same?

Seriously Hugh - you won't even notice once you're in-game because the compass with point N in the same way it always does, and you'll run N or E or W and the fact that another map is based on the bit of land that lies to the E or W or S or N won't make any different to you :p

when i say like AoM thats just in the forests... the CPs themsleves are much more like qwai river....

so like Assualt on Qwai or The river mestia...

with my help ive been able to cut the time it takes to do the map by around 2 months, but still dont exsplain how he dose the other stuff so fast :lol:

nooo, ive been able to help taxi do a bunch of the colourmaps, detailmaps, over and under growth in 24hrs which would take normally around 2months to do by hand.

2months??? hmmmmm maybe...yeah could be actually...

point is we have figured out how to make mapping much more manageable than the average pubby noob...hehe...

rhino...TBH does alot of support work which lets me just work on maps cause that what im good at...yeah i do some statics too but i really love the maps... if it werent for rhino fools road wouldnt be in nearly as beautiful condition as it is...

BUT i still hold artistic license and he can.....well..you know... hehe... i let others do all of the vehicle layout and other types of things...

i basically do
terrain
statics
CP layout
roads
overgrowth
undergrowth
and of course I add a touch of TLC in every corner of the map...

with out further ado...the first sketch of fools road...A4 size in a coffee shop...which led to a A3 size graph paper sketch..which doesnt fit on my scanner...

I like the 3 part map concept it makes sense first in the woods then the city then all our war.
