This tut takes the form of a 3dsmax8 .max file containing lots of sequential models & text instructions for building a simple MEC city static. The idea is that you can select & study each stage of the process, & look at things like modifiers, what subobject selections are active, or how the mesh is being reduced on collision meshes.


In preparation for making statics for bf2, you'll need bf2's texture folders unzipped to the bf2 folder so that max can access them & you can set the correct texture paths for export.

The easiest way to do this is to unzip the enitre mods/bf2/objects_client.zip & mods/bf2/objects_server.zip into a new mods/bf2/objects folder.

Also included in the tutorial files are a few new PR textures that you can put into this new objects folder. (texture path for them is already set up, so you can paste them in).


Note: I've also included an extra maxfile in the package which contains some random building parts for making MEC city statics, so you can merge them into your scene & attach doors, windows, aircon boxes etc.

is there any way of getting some statics you made without downloading and using 3dsmax... so simply as a folder which you can use in the bf2 editor....?

we will have a bunch of new statics in .7 BUT they will not be be released at least until the open beta...

hopefully some community made stuff will come around and we can start using that..

You should get BF2 Material and the GUI[shadderwrapper] from bfeditor, handy tool to inspect/change texture paths

just a sugestion for the modelers , can you make more destroyed buldings ? right now the only destroyed building is the hotel from jalalabad , will be cool to see the bf2 statics in a destroyed version (not destructible) , that will be usefull when you are traing to make city that were bombarded ,etc.

Could I open a bf2 static and at least edit it down to destructed? Or is that illegal Like i think it is?

How do you open a bf2 static anyway its a mesh file and it seems 3ds won't open it.

Im trying to learn to make objects for PR, its frustrating.

Atm im at point where im trying to load BF2/PR textures for 3ds max 8. When i have unzipped objects_client and objects_server from BF2 and PR to same folder, and i try to make 3ds max load them just like matt.b explained in first post, the program crashes.

So i have unzipped all objects to "Battlefield 2\mods\pr\objects" and in 3ds max 8 i do the following: 'customize' from top menu --> Configure user paths ---> selecting tab called 'external files' ---> clicking button 'add' ---> browsing to 'Battlefield 2\mods\pr\objects' ---> checking the 'add subpaths'-checkbox and then clicking 'use path'-button ======> 3ds max loads some of the stuff and then crashes (application error, no specific reasons given).

It crashes too even if i select less folders+folder paths at sametime. I can add them one folder by one folder. But i still couldnt find all textures from unzipped folders for this tutorial file from the paths which the program gave to me when it told me it cant find "these and these" textures from "here and here".



Question is that is there any better ways of loading BF2 textures to 3ds max 8 so that i can use them for my objects what im gonna make and so that i can view this tutorial file with textures ?

Tutorial for entire process of setting up 3ds max 8 for making objects for PR would be needed too, i couldnt find one its been quite frustrating searching little pieces of hints how to make it happen.
Maybe even tutorial from point of installation of 3ds max to point where you have working self made object in your map.

You can usually find the stuff you're looking for either by looking in the modding tutorials section or using google.
