View Full Version : Mapping The Tutorial/Tool List for PR Mapping (For Beginners & Up)

Rhino
2007-05-18, 00:55
If you want to start mapping for BF2 / PR, here is a list of all the tuts you need to do to get to grips with how BF2 works and how to map for it and PR.

First you need to download and install the BF2 Editor (http://files.realitymod.com/resources/preditor.zip) and install it with PR.

This tutorial will set you up with all files needed:
https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f189-modding-tutorials/14468-setting-up-bf2-editor-pr-mapping-modding.html

Do these tuts in order, and there are probably some other ones you may want to do as well on the BFEditor forums.

NOTE TO BEGINNERS: We strongly recommend beginners to start mapping in vBF2 even if you only plan on mapping for PR with a small, simple, 256x2 test map (click to view recommend settings for a first test map) (http://i.imgur.com/KzlIabh.jpg) just to get to grips with how BF2 and the BF2 Editor works. Diving strait into PR mapping will only get you really confused with maps crashing when only trying to test them ingame as the first load of tutorials do not tell you how to set your map up for PR. Once you have learnt the basics and got a simple, small test map done which you can run around on and has a few terrain features, statics, roads, perhaps some overgrowth and undergrowth too etc, then its time for you to look into PR mapping.

&#@$#!%* bloody hell. just wanted to dabble in mapping but just tryin means getn a handful of programs and being confronted with a screen full of options. looks like that idea has been killd. instead of a tutorial for beginners can we got a tutorial for DUMMIES. it just seems like im passing by so much important things when i use these tut's, i think the real problel is they just tell u wat to do not how. I made a map i just dont now how i did it. that seems to be a problem with all the tutorials iv had a look at. can any1 derict me to a tutor that explains as it goes and doesnt ask 4 any more programs?

probaly cos your running your map in PR and you aint got to the bit where you need to allow your map to work with pr. When doing the basic BF2 tuts you should be testing your map in BF2, and mapping in the bf2 mod also to keep things as simple and haste free as possible.

run your map in window mode then you can get a error about your prob, it may be cos your running in low gfx and you dont have a low detail texture which = crash.

In the level editor, on the right hand side toolbar, scroll down until you see a bar that says "layers". Expand that and there should be a check box that says "Default". Make sure it is checked...

1. Right-click on the installer>select Properties from the dropdown menu.

2. A new window should appear, select the Compatibility tab to the right of the General tab.

3. In the Compatibility tab, click on the square option for 'Run this program in compatibility mode for:'

4. Click the OK button, and you should be good to go. Run the installer, it should work. It worked for me and many other Vista mappers.

5. Good luck and have fun. :) BTW, welcome to the forums.

Hi all hope I have posted this in the right spot

I have been doing the tuts and found them very handy and they have become my bible for bf2 mapping.

But while I was building this big map 512 x4 I have come across a lot of problems. One of the problems is that I can see throw the textures when testing the map on a local server.

I have also done a bf2 shortcut so I can run the game in window mod and at 800 x 600 allowing me to see any errors. But the problem is that the game crashers now i have set up overgrowth textures and will not load past 16% and the bf2 local server crashers back to desktop with no error? :-(

I have done screen shots of all the data in the bf2 editor.
Just note that the file is 13 MB big. Also note you will have to Zoom in to see the script as the screenshot has all the map info from start to the point i am now.

Download JPG page here: 2 scripts joined.jpg (http://www.mediafire.com/?mzlmwmzxyyd)

Direct link to download: http://download262.mediafire.com/ksly1wzv9jtg/mzlmwmzxyyd/2+scripts+joined.jpg

Also I have done a recording on wegames to show you what problems I was having before I added overgrowth

my first map just testing (http://www.wegame.com/watch/my_first_map_just_testing/)

Please if you can help me in anyway I would be ever so great full. :15_cheers

you should not do a 512x4 map, do a 1024x2 map which is the same size but higher quality and less problems. The only time you want to think of doing a scale 4 map is for a 1024x4 map.

when doing the first basic tuts its best to use BF2, then move onto PR once you have finished them with the "pr_edit" mod.

Slight problem, when I go into 'Level settings' to change the Factions, the window is too big and I can't hit 'Okay', I can't make it smaller and i've tried making every dammned other window smaller as well.

Oh and even though I save it exactly how it says, when I load up vBF2 it's never on the (Create local) map list.

Hey.

I've started mapping a few hours ago.. and i think im going pretty well.

I've tested a bunch of times...

I have downloaded the Rhino's or PR Samples andLightsample (No idea of wth are these files).

Well, after testing and playing whit the Editor.. i confirmed the last "Version" of my map.. adding a nice variation of vehicles.. a Hill whit a Bunker.. etc

But now.. in the last version.. when i load it in Bf2 it just crashes when the loading is completed..

I think, i have "many" Objects so i have to low that number a bit..

Map is custom.. smallest one whit a little number of Statics. Maybe 1 IGLA, 8 Tanks etc.

Heres the pic of my 1st map.

http://screenshot.xfire.com/screenshot/large/79843b397425c04acd84ba62fc77b38b46aad191.jpg

And btw.. thanks alot for the Tutos!.. but do you know the reason of why it is crashing?

May i post here?

The thing to do is search that error on the BFeditor forums, so if I search for "Virtual +impl" in the search tool, here's my results:
Search Results (http://bfeditor.org/forums/index.php?act=Search&CODE=show&searchid=69ec577ef3424215148f0a3586d988c2&search_in=posts&result_type=topics&highlite=%2BVirtual+%2Bimpl)

got 9 topics found in that search, chances are one will tell you how to fix this if not more :p

Iplayercontrolobject.h - Official BF Editor Forums (http://bfeditor.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=12044&hl=Virtual++impl)

that topic says that it's probably down to you pasting in files from other maps into your maps without fully changing them to read from your map etc.

but look though some of the other topics and you might find more answers.

Thanks for answer Rhino.

I will try "cut/paste" "LayerInit.con" from bf2editor/mods/bf2 to bf2/mods/pr

Maybe it will solve the problem..

Now i cant even paint wth!

torenico

It seems that i cant fix it for now. It keeps giving me an error.. but the only way to run it whitout problems is by using "BF2 r.exe".. i can play but the terrain will look like achess board, and random black holes appears when you move the Camera.

Now im going to learn how to make Perfect Minimaps and Triggables.

Rudd;1639057']Added link to bf2 secondary heightmap generator, readme is in the file iirc.

That tool kinda sucks tbh as all it dose is reflect the primary terrain out, making a really crappy secondary terrain...

You should really be making custom secondary terrain when making a map or better still, when making the pri terrain from either generating the terrain or DEM data, make the surrounding terrain at the same time.

Rudd
2011-08-04, 02:48
thats not always necessary, and the sec heightmaps from that tool are a good starting point/placeholder

Rhino
2011-08-04, 03:26
Rudd;1639331']thats not always necessary, and the sec heightmaps from that tool are a good starting point/placeholder

This is basically what the tool is doing, using OGT as an example.

http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/6848/unled1ca.jpg

Now with OGTs VD you most likley wouldn't notice how crappy the surrounding terrain was but with a much larger VD, and epically on a map with air assets, you would easily be able to see things like for starters, the river looks totally wrong and the train track lines (which the terrain has been modified for) don't meet up at all etc, espically in the NW of the map the train line goes off at a 90deg angle all of a sudden.. In some locations you could even see the extra rivers on the map...

The tool isn't a good starting point as it means you need to do even more work to clean it up the surrounding terrain than if you where just working with a blank map and if used as a place holder, it would get left...

It is far better to do the surrounding terrain at the very begging of the map, epically if your generating the terrain or using DEM data.

If generating your terrain, generate your map size by 3 then split the map up in photoshop, using the centre for the pri terrain and the edges for the surrounding terrain, as I did for my "Test Airfield" map:
Design Map:
http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/7029/unled2et.jpg

L3DT Minimap with surrounding terrain:
http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/7540/64198691.jpg

And if your using DEM data, take the area outside of where you want your map to be as well as the map, then split it up in photoshop, much like what you would do above with generating terrain, except your not generating it, although if your going to shove it though Geocontrol keep it as one for that before you split it up.

Doing the above not only means you get a much, much better result and very nice transition between your Pri and Surrounding terrain, but you also save a heap of time trying to clean up a really crappy surrounding terrain which dosen't work.

http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/9996/screen1346.jpg

Rudd
2011-08-04, 03:30
well, its like any tool, appropriate use means it'll work and inappropriate use will result in not so great stuff.

If you have a terrain that'll benefit from using a more advanced method then you can use that

Amok@ndy
2011-08-04, 12:52
the tool works fine for flat desert maps for example rhino

There are many, many things that can go wrong when you first load a map.

Search the PR modding forum for "15% CTD", "16% CTD", etc. Another really good resource (with even better search engine) is BF Editor Portal (http://www.bfeditor.org).

I'm sorry but I can't support this advice as going off what percentage you crashed on isn't very accruate and can easily send someone off on a wild goose chase...

by what shooter posted there could be four different things wrong with the map and I very much doubt any of thous things listed is actually the problem, and if they are, no clear solution is posted there.

The first thing you should do is test you map in windowed mode, by cloning your pr/bf2 shortcut and then adding a " +fullscreen 0 +szx 1024 +szy 768" (without the quotes) to the end of your shortcuts target box. Then running your map as normal, see if you get an error. If so you should then search that error on the BFeditor forums AF linked above.

If no then your next step should be looking into the debugger (bf2_r.exe), more info here: SELF HELP (Please read First) - Official BF Editor Forums (http://www.bfeditor.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=6618)

But for you Linx_esp I would only try the windowed mode at this stage. Running your map though the debugger is most likley only going to confuse you more at this stage.

Your problem is most likley down to you testing your map in PR when its set up for vBF2 (since you have only done the first two tuts) and as such, its not working in PR since PR works quite differently from vBF2 in terms of kit setups etc. As I thought was noted on the OP of this topic, but wasn't and now is noted there, for beginners I recommend first mapping in vBF2 to keep things as simple as possible just to get a grasp of how BF2 works. Once you have done that and made a basic test map, then move onto pr_edit and learn the ways of PR, on top of your knowledge of vBF2.

AFsoccer

Ok, the map now loads untill the end (I can enven see the "join game" button) but then another error message appears. It says something like:

"texture not found: levels/my_level/detailmaps/tx03x03_1"

EDIT: Ok I fixed it again by copying the file and placing it into the folder, but now I have a similar error, like the above one but with "tx05x05_1", I've made the same thing and now I can play!

Now I am going to try placing some objects around the map an see how reacts the level. If there is any problem, I will edit again this post. Thanks.

But also as per the OP:
Rhino;366110']NOTE TO BEGINNERS: We strongly recommend beginners to start mapping in vBF2 even if you only plan on mapping for PR with a small, simple, 256x2 test map (click to view recommend settings for a first test map) (http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/7113/08192011044652.jpg) just to get to grips with how BF2 and the BF2 Editor works.

Got a little problem, when painting my map I tried to change the render mode because the super shiny white map was killing my eyes, so I changed from "Object Normal Mode" to "Object Color Mode", so the map was darker and it felt better to work on it with this render mode. But when I tried to continue painting I couldn't, even when changing back to the other render mode.

And there were big black squares where I worked before activating this render mode. Now all this work is lost, I can't find a way to get my painting back, and the minimap doesn't show it aswell now, while it was before this bug :(

put down two main base flags, one for each team, make unchangeable, place down spawns for both teams, then for the insurgent/taliban etc team, place a load of ammo caches down as an object spawner, team locked to team 1 and the python code will do the rest. Look at another insurgency map's GPO.con for more tips.

i've become rather obsessed with the idea of a korengal 2.0, as many players have shown a liking to the atmosphere, and general environment of korengal, and I share it. I also feel as if my knowledge of how to properly balance maps in PR is adequate to make maps.

I've written about why I feel as if the current korengal map is simply not up to standard. I plan to study the current map, and read extensively on the real battles, and environment of the korengal.

How long would an estimate be for going from someone who has simply never tried to map, to a full 2x2km finished product?

I'm busy, but if I find myself interested in my own work, I'll be putting a lot of time into it. I don't expect to be done a few weeks, but for mappers out there, how long was it for you to actually know what you were doing?

Right, got an estimate in hours?
[From someone with no mapping experience at all, just lots of forum trolling]

I've read multiple times on the forums from devs is that you can expect, particularly as a new mapper, to take around a year to get a map going that is up to scratch for PR. This is with a presumed 'normal' amount of time dedicated each week (working around school/work). I'd estimate easily 100+ hours.

One thing to look out for though, that I've seen far too many times...

Once you make some headway, start getting some external backups going on the map files, as I think I've seen ~3 different promising projects get scrapped because the 'HDD died' or the 'computer is having some problems' - a product of the process taking so long... there's a higher chance of something failing in the meantime.

It can really depend on what your doing and your circumstances on how long it will take to make a map.

Battle of Ia Drang took about 2 months to complete as I had a solid plan and I was working on it for a few hours each day. The first couple weeks was just planning, simple drawings of the map's layout, I drew quite a few (important, as the first plan was not used in the final design) and scrutinised them to find what layout would make the most sense historically and would work game play wise too. I got most of the terrain done in the first month, the second month was adding details and mostly GPO work.

It helped that it was a fairly small and simple map, but the main reason it was finished so quickly was the planning at the beginning. Its easy to waste a lot of time fluffing around when you don't have a set plan or goal.
If its your first map though it will take much longer as most of the time is just spent on learning with a lot of trial and error.

im looking at this and I think we are discouraging anyone thats going to try mapping XD
but I agree with vapoman, you should plan ahead as it will save you alot of time, (although I dont do it, and suffer the consequences XD)
one thing to take into consideration is not only the total hours you are going to take but if you have an idea of how things work and how you want your map to be you can draw out the base (OG,UG, terrain, textures, roads etc) in not alot of time using some tools and then you can pick up on the editor wen you have the time and go on building your points of interest one by one.
for example, in brecourt I had to do everything at once and o spreading out the map finishing off on every area after I was done, it took me alot of time, with Vung ro I managed to do it much faster although its a larger map because I laid the groundwork and then worked individually on the points of interest.

How do i make teams for PR? Like, for the Team 1 and Team 2 thing. Because someone told me it's different to what you have to do in normal BF2? Is there a different way than the level settings?

Go into your .init and manually change it, it will need constant updating, if it doesn't look like this exactly

run ../../Factions/faction_init.con 1 "gb"
run ../../Factions/faction_init.con 2 "ch"

and breaks down into the normal bf2 way of viewing it kits wont work properly. IE some you get from a crate will be invisible and missing sounds.

In your map folder. It should NOT be in another folder, it should be a notepad file floating in your main map file.

Everything in the tutorial seems great, only problem is i got to point #1 Envmaps in Moderate tutorial and in that tutorial it says i should already know how to and have created lightmaps for my map before starting that tutorial. The problem is Lightmaps is #9 in Moderate Tutorial. And i can't find a lightmap tutorial which isnt 5+ years old. I found one but when he tells me what parameters to use for the lightmaps there are missing parameters etc. Anybody knows what my next step should be?
I tried following this tutorial
Lightmap Tutorial For Beginners - Official BF Editor Forums (http://www.bfeditor.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=10002)
But he doesn't got for example: "GIFillIntensity" in his list of parameters(or whatever they are called).
Is it really important to first generate lightmaps then starting on Envmaps or can i follow the steps in the PR guide even if the guy on the envmaps tutorial contradicts the steps in this this tutorial?(btw i don't know what Envmaps is atm). somebody please help me out what to learn next:)

Actually, he does but it's called "skyWhite" instead of GIFillIntensity. So the value he used was 0.3. I'm not sure why vBF2 named it one thing in the editor and another thing in the text file, but they are the same.

The EnvMap controls the reflections on your map. So reflections on scopes, reflections of water and puddles, etc. There is a separate tutorial for it here (http://www.bfeditor.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=3587). But to answer your question, it's best to do your EnvMap after your terrain lightmap... BUT only if you're doing your final versions. If you are just trying to get your basic look created, lightmap the terrain as it is now and tweak how it want it to look. Not having all the shadows in the right place won't make a difference for the draft WIP EnvMap. Then follow the EnvMap tutorial and it will create a more representative result because it uses the terrain color to create it. Now you can move on to tweaking your water color.

Then when you are done with the map, you'll have to re-do the terrain lightmaps anyway, so it's a good time to re-do the EnvMap(s) too.

Alright thanks for the quick response! So you are basically saying i should keep following the steps as you guys have made them in this thread? And one more question, could you explain what would happen if i do envmaps before lightmapping on a final version of a map ? why is it better to do lightmapping before ?

Mineral
2013-01-06, 21:24
cause they will look better ;) And and in the end lightmaps change to look of a map drastically. Env maps are nothing more then little images stored in your map files which are used to make these reflections. So you want to make these at the end so they reflect how you map looks then, not how it looks now.

Many different reasons mate, you need to tell us around what percent or better yet, give us a screen of the actual error.

Run whatever mod/game the level is with in windowed mode, then load up your map and a error should pop up before it crashes and tell you what the problem is

The two links for mod toolkit v3 are outdated, new correct one is:

FilePlanet: Battlefield 2 - Mod Toolkit v3 [BETA] (http://www.fileplanet.com/164495/160000/fileinfo/Battlefield-2---Mod-Toolkit-v3-%5BBETA%5D)

(just missing the "beta" part in the link)

And 2nd thing is the error link http://lorneswork.com/work/java_BF2HMT/tutorial/ ( in your section "Advanced Tutorials " and point 6. )

Correct new one is: BF2HMT Tutorial - Work - Lorne's Online Portfolio (http://lorneswork.com/projects/BF2HMT/tutorial/) , where the download is here:

it is but the editor is somehow corrupting the RendDx9.dll so until we found a solution its quite risky to use it

Most certainly!

This explains you how to set stuff up for bf editor and pr.

https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f189-modding-tutorials/14468-setting-up-bf2-editor-pr-mapping-modding.html

At one point I'll expand on it so it works for both people with bf2 and people without. Now it focuses on people without bf2 installed.

But as Amok says, we are still figuring out some issues that sometimes pop up, let us know how it goes ;) Perhaps in a separate thread then!
