The '80 is fine: I used to fix them (amongst other small arms) for a living.
The reason it's 5.56? Weight of ammo carried to amount carried ratio is increased & 5.56 is a more practical calibre for urban battlefields than 7.62. Also as MrD said: a dead guy causes less burden and less additional manpower than a wounded guy. |

The reason the British arent interested in a 6.8 round is the simple fact that theyd have every army in NATO moaning at them due to the agreement regarding 5.56mm for everyone (although, specialist units have been leaning towards higher calibre rifles in recent years)
