Should 'civilians' look the same or different than other insurgents?
This is a poll to see what the PR community thinks about the civilian class getting similar clothing to other insurgents. v0.7 currently has civilians with similar clothing and sometimes causes confusion.
I wont go into detail about the advantages and disadvantages of each, I'll only comment that unfortunately the engine limitation is that guns, vests, backpacks do not render at range so it makes identifying a civilian at range difficult (although not impossible). Anyways feel free to discuss the topic here. There has also been a discussion in this thread about this topic: http://www.realitymod.com/forum/f10-...nsurgents.html |

Can you give them different colored pants? Maybe white pants and a black shirt?

I'd like for them to look quite similar to the insurgents, but still have enough variation to tell the difference if their weapon doesn't draw at a distance.
Maybe instead of bright neon green or bright white, he could have street clothes that have a whiter shirt and darker pants. Or a slightly blue tinted shirt. |

I guess it really is a gameplay issue. If we make the civilians wear bright reflective vests like construction works, we really make them identifiable. I believe this is against the purpose of the civilian class. Insurgents are civilians or ex-military and look like the general populous. If we highlight the civilians, we remove the advantage of being an insurgent and treat them as a conventional force.
Since PR is making obvious steps towards reality by removing the mini-map and the squad leader spawns. I think the obvious choice here would be to make insurgents look like civilians as to give them a realistic advantage over the superior conventional attacking force. |

I believe the civi's should have a "similar" skin to normal insurgents but the skin should have some distinct differences and i say this because a bright white or green shirt to clearly identify him wouldn't be realistic and having the "same" skin as the insurgents is just too hard to identify them.
Perhaps they could have an arm/head band or a badge/picture/stripe on their shirt/pants? Perhaps they could have different shoes? maybe not so distinct as they had in 0.6. |

What if you make them look just like insurgents except for some small difference like sunglasses or a logo on their clothes or anything that would render from far away, but not be completely obvious?

I really like it the way it is now, but for gameplay's sake, I think a different shirt color and different shoes would be good.

You should be able to tell the difference between the two just by looking at their behavior.
Civies usually wonder around (not sprinting) out in the open, and most often their hands are in "grenade throwing" position and they rarely go prone. If you see a character looking through "invisible" binoculars, chances are he is a civie. Insurgents usually sprint around and you could tell by the way they run (invisible gun in hand) The current system is fine as it is. I would imagine IRL it is just as hard if not harder to differentiate. From gameplay perspective, it isn't that demanding to observe your target before shooting is it? Besides, the primary objective on insurgent maps is to destroy caches, not exactly shoot up as many insurgents as possible. |

I think there should be some distinction, that will be noticeable to someone who looks hard enough. I will admit though, it's frustrating. RPG Troopers and Civilians are nearly identical, and there have been times when I'll be sitting in the Challenger watching a Squad clear a Cache, only to have an RPG hit me. I look at the impact area and see 2 people in white shirts, but only 1 fired the RPG. I figure it would be pretty hard to hide an RPG in real life (I guess he could toss it away, but w/e), but it's absurd. I can tell the difference between the Civi and most other Insurgent classes, but if a Civilian is following an RPG guy around, I'm totally stumped. I say make the RPG guy look different, the civilian is fine as is.
I agree with PFC though, it's usually easy to tell by their tactics who is who. |
