Clan, Guild, Team, Community ?

Since there seems to be an eternal struggle about the signification of these "categories" of gaming's organisation. Lets discuss about their meaning.

So, whats the difference between eachone ?

Discuss.

Clan: Usually refered to by either FPS or RTS players
Guild: Usually used by RPG players
Team: Used normally by either FPS or Sports game players.
Community: Used mostly by forum users Never really heard of a community in a game before.

These are the basic ways they are used. There are some people who come over from one genre and continue to use their meaning for an organization such as an FPS player going to an RPG and using "Clan" or "Team"

Clan / Guild: group of players that are connected in some way during gaming generally entering ladders, tournaments etr but also enjoy playing and working together.

Team – a part of a clan / guild that play in a competitive environment

Community several clans / guilds all under the same name spread over different games

Too cool for skool, eh wookie?

What bout units? And no, EEF is not a unit, before the unit-bashers turn up to mash my head in with a mallett, ala Wack-a-Mole.

people seem to be getting community wrong

gaming community: A large group of gamers that are not too serious at gaming and play many different games for fun with fellow members. Example: |TG| or tacticalgamer.

You sometimes see like |TG-X| witch identicates that this member is part of a "squad" of the community. This just means that whenever this group of people want to vrs clans, or other "squads", they are easily identified. These "squads" can identicate that these people play together often. Also, these "squads" are usually the serious gaming bunch of the community.

DM=Clan. We have fun, we arent serious and we are all about the game and the people who we play it with. Perfect. IMO forums ruined what clans used to be.

A clan has recruitment methods and requirements (you have to try out for it, or be invited in). Clans are generally (at least intended to) last a long time, not just for 1 season in a league, and have a friendship / comradely element. Clans compete in competitions for the games they play (unless they are in the off season). Clans participate in organized gaming. A clan that doesn't compete or get involved in organized gaming is really more of a wannabe clan, or just a group of guys who like to wear tags and pretend they are a clan.

A guild is a clan, team, or community that plays MMO games like WoW, GuildWars, etc.

A team is a manufactured clan for the sole purpose of competing in a particular tournament or league season. They are basically full of mercenaries who come together to make an uber clan full of all stars so they can win something. They lack the friendship element of a clan (or, if they happen to have it, it's not an important element in what they are trying to achieve). Teams don't last long and are never intended to last long, as the mercenaries will leave and reform new teams each season. A clan is sort of like a local team of friends who play in a softball league, and a team is like a major league baseball team full of people who have nothing to do with the city they are representing.

A community is usually larger or much larger than a clan, and almost always lacks the competitiveness of a clan. It's usually just a bunch of people who want to get something out of being in the community such as preferred access to a server, or people who aren't serious enough to get into a clan, but still want to belong to a group of people who play the game they play. Basically they are large groups of casual gamers.

Kinda interesting but I do not agree all clan must be competitive to be a "real" clan. Theres different type of clan.

Although, I used to play some MMO's before and there was also clan. Not only guilds.

At the end, clan, guild, team, unit, etc. are all very similar. It all depends on the type they are... RolePlayers, Competition, Casual, Friends, etc.
