If only he'd won the war... Actually, any chance of the R-DEVs making a new exe/batch file/whatever for those of us that bought CO on steam that'll run CO with PR? Like how they changed it to include the British DLC somehow? EDIT: You can make it work people! | ||||

Not sure how you came about that information rabbits, but you can run mods/PR with Steam. Its a matter of setting it up to launch with the mods. Where did you hear that you couldn't?

I don't understand where all this worry over the Steam version is from. There have been several posts and threads in this very forum about it and all have come to the same conclusion that the Steam version is just fine. All it takes it a little bit more effort by either using the old "-mod=" startup parameter to launch Arma 2 as a mod or using symlinks to point OA to your Arma 2 directory.

Just gonna put this out here (again) so that people who doesn't understand or have missed the information will be notified.
To play PR:ArmA2 you will need a copy of "ArmA2:Combined Operations (aka CO)". -- "Arma2:Combined Operations" IS the original "ArmA2" and the stand-alone expansion "Operation Arrowhead"(aka OA) but on ONE SINGLE launcher. So, in other words, you don't need to buy ArmA2, ArmA2:OA AND ArmA2:CO. All you need to buy is ArmA2 AND ArmA2:OA- OR!! ArmA2:CO (which is cheaper than to buy both games separately) NOW WHY!! OH WHY!! Would BIS do something as complicated as this? Why would they make a stand-alone expansion and whyyy!! Why would they make a new title for the expansion and the original game if they're just putten together on one .exe launcher. Answer to that question is simple: They're from eastern europe & they like to make things complicated when it comes to computer games. As if the game isn't complicated enough already. |

I didn't know you could run ArmA2 as a mod for OA, I'll go look up how to do that, but I'm willing to bet I'm not the only person who doesn't get this stuff. It would be nice if players didn't have to work out how to get the mod to run and there was a premade shortcut that'll work for steam users shipped with the mod. I'm willing to bet there's a lot of good players who're just put off by the amount of tech stuff that there at first seems to be involved in getting things to run, there's very little information on the internet about it that's written in very user friendly language.
EDIT: I've checked it out, it does totally work, and it is quite simple, but I still think it'd be nice to save people some effort and brain wracking and include a shortcut for steam people as well. For the benefit of anyone else reading this, assuming the mod folder for PR:ArmA2 is gonna be called @PR, you just create a shortcut like this: Code:
Target: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\arma 2 operation arrowhead\ArmA2OA.exe" "-mod=C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\arma 2;Expansion;ca;@PR" Start In: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\arma 2 operation arrowhead" The bit in green is why I think the BIS devs were making the same mistake as half the people on here... Not that I actually know what it means. |

There are already launchers that will make the command line or you, though personally I find the command line pretty easy to set up if you just follow the instructions. All you have to do is set up a command line with:
"*STEAMPATH*\Steam.exe" -applaunch 33930 -nosplash -world=empty -showScriptErrors "-mod=*STEAMPATH*\steamapps\common\arma 2;*STEAMPATH*\steamapps\common\arma 2 operation arrowhead\EXPANSION;ca;*MOD1*;*MOD2*;*MOD3*" Where *STEAMPATH* should be where your steam is installed (say, d:\Steam), and *MOD1*, *MOD2* and *MOD3* (or as many mods as you like) are names of addon folders located in the Arma 2 Operation Arrowhead folder (ex: @CBA;@ACE;@ACEX;@ACEX_SM). If you have non-steam Arma 2 then instead of the *STEAMPATH*\steamapps\common\arma 2 you should use the actual Arma 2 path (where you installed Arma 2, ex: d:\Arma 2). If you have Arma 2 from steam but OA from disc then instead of "*STEAMPATH*\Steam.exe" -applaunch 33930 you should just launch your arma2oa.exe, and replace the *STEAMPATH*\steamapps\common\arma 2 operation arrowhead with your OA installation path (aka d:\Arma 2 Operation Arrowhead). If you have neither version on steam but don't have them installed in the same directory, do both of the above and again it'll all work. Remember to keep the quotes ("...") where I wrote them, this is required if you have spaces in the name of at least 1 of the folders in the path, so windows knows it's actually a single launch parameter and not 2 separate parameters. Again there are programs that will do this for you however I don't find it very difficult to just plug in a few path names. Hopefully PR will just do this automatically for people by detecting Arma 2 and Arma 2 Operation Arrowhead folders and creating the appropriate shortcut. |
