I have never played Arma 2 but hearing the size of the maps has put a question in my head. In maps 25 to 225 km it seems like finding the enemy in such huge space would be difficult at best when on some occasions I can go through a full game of normal BF:PR without finding a person (Very rarely but it happens). Even with 120 people in a server, all that space seems kind of daunting. Is this a problem in PVP Arma 2 for those who have played it?

I've never played the actual game, but I've played the Demo online and generally you'll find that there is a focus around specific points. Yes, you go a while without finding anyone but you'll usually end up all fighting over the same zone.
This is fairly realistic, as well, as far as I'm aware: most fights wouldn't occur in forests but rather "hotspots," such as cities. Of course that also means forests would be a great spot to hide. |

When the mission has clear cut objectives it is not hard to figure out where the enemy might be and send recon out to those areas to find the enemy. When large assets like tanks move it is easier to find, but a lot of guys on foot can be a tough proposition until they open fire.
Honestly though that is what makes it fun, you are always on guard and the movements you take really matter. |

A recon squad would flourish with silenced weapons/sniper rifles, long ranges, and wide open turf in ArmA2. Hence, ArmA2 is about knowing where your enemy is... then shooting at him from where he can't see you?

Just because the map's size is 255km^2 doesn't mean it is all used at once, most missions take place in PR sized areas. (Or smaller, and with a few exceptions of course)

Well it basically works like BFPR, you have objectives {like cap points} and so does the enemy. Unless your team is just totally incompetent, they will go for that objective and so will the enemy. The two teams will meet at the objective and fight over it until one gains the upper hand and caps it. Sure, you can wander all over the map if you want, but that doesnt accomplish anything unless your doing something like flanking around the enemies rear etc. So yea, ARMA has some huge maps, but its not like you dont know where to go.

I've never had problems finding combat, but sometimes finding the enemy can be challenging. You have lots of room to maneuver. And therefore tons of ways to approach an objective and fight for it. I've been ambushed on my way to an objective before and had 20min fire fights with a tree line because I couldn't actually see the enemy shooter.
In Arma real world tactics come to play a lot more than they do in PR. Adding the element of having to find the enemy and not generally 'knowing' where they are like you do in PR is what makes Arma a different cat to be skinned altogether. Arma isn't a game for everyone as it requires loads of patience. Being able to accomplish objectives and not just run towards gunfire is important for good games. |

The smaller missions that only really have one objective are not suited to PR style game play in my opinion. | |

Wow, thank you for this amazing feedback. This not only answers my question but also gave a detailed description of how Arma 2 works in general.

ARMA2 has "missions". Basically where someone sets player's weapons, layout, vehicle locations, respawns, etc.
You can set it up where it's the same as BF2 or totally different. |
