Default Air Assets in Arma 2

One thing that I've learned from the MP in ArmA 2, is the inherent overpowered-ness of Air assets. Albeit in competitive or cooperative, air assets are always hogged or spammed if the map designer includes it. I just want to know if PR:ArmA is overhauling the air system to include more counter-measures or vulnerability of air assets, to kind of tone it down? Otherwise it would sort of turn into this.

Well the thing about that is that in RL, air assets have an overwhelming superiority over ground forces... The air assets in arma 2 have actually been nerfed with a loss of counter-measures.

I think they should stay as they are. The mission designer will just have to severly limit thier use to 1 or 2 per game (planes that is).

That's what I'm hoping. Just maybe a gunship or two, or just a lone jet, because more than that would dominate the opfor forces (assuming that they'll be Taliban in MP).

I guess it will be like bf2:PR, one or two helis/planes for blufor.

What your talking about is already "in-game" really, it's just up to the mission designer. Well designed missions can lessen the impact of air assets. especially if there is lots of AA hiding about

In ARMA, yeah air assets are damn powerful like RL but it does take some co-ordination to get it all working together, getting a scout/rifleman squad to laser designate the target for a plane needs quite a bit of communication

Alos in ARMA there is a ambient civilian module that randomly spawns civilians. This in itself could be a counter-measure against air power (in that the taliban could mix in with the civilians to put off bombing runs).

Although I doubt there is any consequence of killing civs at this point

That said I dont think our PvP has ambient civs yet...

This is something I am interested in as a known jet whore in PR:BF2.

My advice is to keep it to one or two jets/Gunships per team (depending on maps and so on).

And here is the bit that I am sure some will not like. Make them lazier dependent. Just like it is it PR:BF2. This will mean that Mr. Jo blogs in the A-10 is not going to get all the kills before the rest of the players on the server get a look in. He is not going to fly over the "AO" and kill all the tanks/BMP/Wheelbarrows with in 2 mins of getting the jet/GunShip airborne. Make it so that for Jet/Gunships to be useful, They will need to work with spotters and so on. What I mean to say is. No Air to Ground auto targeting systems (Air to Air is fine I think). Or if you really must have some form of Auto Targeting. Make sure they have very limited ammo for that weapon system with a long reload timer for it.

I remember back in the day, me and my friend would just pair up; we would take over entire villages/towns in Co-Op with just one spotter and one jet. I would laze whatever targets in the village and the bombs would do the rest. He would rack up dozens of vehicles and hundreds of infantry kills. He would just reload and come back, rinse and repeat, to the point where it was damn near boring because you would just completely obliterate everything in your path. In PvP it was a bit more tricky, but the point was still there. 2 people could achieve what an entire team could, granted if they didn't have AA or Air assets of their own.

That is the case in PR:BF2. If only players would dam well learn to laze. Still makes me sick that they make all the sounds from the como-rose. But still fail to laze the target. lol

But the point is I wish for all Air to ground bombs/missiles to only be effective if the target has been lazed. I Don't wish to see on my hud as I fly along that There is 4 BMPs and I can just spam a Mavrick at it. All I wish to see is a "Lazer target" to lock on too.

This would make it a necessity for teamwork if you want any CAS to work.

Arma has an autolock mode for aircraft, user made ones can remove this and it might even be removed on veteran mode for ARMA, would need to check though.

I believe it was added for SP (where there cant be someone else to laze a target)
