I agree - the commander position is underused to the max since 0.8.

No wonder since it's an equivalent of working for teleshopping - you do nothing but talk to people all the day and every single one of them hates you.

Perhaps I gave the wrong impression with my last post.
I have enjoyed most of the games I played as CO in and have not had (LOL) most of the people hate me for talking.
Brevity is VERY important as is using the squad channel to keep the CO channel clear.
Since I'm on the subject, PLEASE, identify yourself by squad number when talking to the CO.
The comms are one place that Milsim is truly useful.
Call out your squad number and the priority of the message and wait for CO to answer.
One more thing, when you put a contact report on the map for the CO, again, call out your sq# and the kind of contact and it will go on the map faster.
When the contact is dead or retreated, tell the CO so he can erase the marker.
If I don't hear back from a squad I just erase the marker in 2-3 min anyway unless it is armor, then I try to verify if it is still in position before erasing the marker.

They have the perfect spot to win the game from and won't listen to any directions because they "know " how to play and don't want to be bothered with following CO orders or even explaining their squads intentions so they can be shoe-horned into the overall plan somehow.
These are often clan members but not exclusively.

Obviously the CO needs work in v0.85, particularly to make it more attractive, but calling it "useless" is just pure ignorance.

A team with a competent CO and willing SL's will be at a huge advantage over a team without a CO.

There is several things that need improvement, but returning to vanilla bf2 arty, UAV scans and running around shooting at enemies I dont think is a step in the right direction.

Feel free to offer some suggestions, but saying things like "Do the DEVs seem to care? Not exactly.", is making yourself look like a giant ass.
all i can say is look at CPT Winters in "band of brothers". every CO can have a plan and after the first bullet is fired that plan usually changes. that's why i and others feel that the commander should be on the ground with the troops....not on the front but close enough to make combat decisions. i see it as being squad leader of 31 guys. I've played in your squad before and your a good SL dividing squads into A & B teams, suppress and maneuver. i just think if the CO was let out of the box that could happen on a larger scale and would be awesome. i think you and others would be surprised at how pubs would work together on a large scale like this if the CO was given the freedom to see the battlefield and not just view it from a map.

notice that when Cpt Winters was taken from his company command to battalion XO he led from the back and let the other officers lead the company in to battle (quite rightly since he had battalion wide responsibility)

the question is, what size force is the commander commanding?

a platoon, a company, etc?

Given spawning is meant to represent refinforcements I guess the commander is in control of a force company sized or larger.

notice you said XO....they don't lead...the coordinate logistics and supply and whatever else the CO tells them to do from the rear. they don't lead troops though and rarely go out on missions.

as to question of size of force represented in PR....i would have to go with a Company size element that IRL consists of about 100 or more dudes + attachments (armor, snipers, aircraft controllers, engineers, etc...).

Hitman.2.5
Default Re: Who wants to command? Anyone?

what i think the problem is is that no one wants to spend there game play time sitting infront of a map and trying to influence a rabble to do something simple, i have tried to go commander and most of the time there is a few full squads and only two squad leaders have voip and will do as there asked, every one else goes off and does there own thing and we lose because they simply wont cooperate

Do the DEVs seem to care? Not exactly. I would like to see a good DEV post in one of these commander threads.
Hope I don't offend you when stating the following below. If I do, please accept my apology.

What you are addressing here is the passive user culture that we as a community need to change. Thus instead of viewing the tin box as a jail, make a serious attemtpt to get something fun out of it. And the 0 power is not mandatory zero. Its more x power where you as a person gets this awesome opportunity to create power out of a zero situation.

You do that by doing the following simple cool stuff:

1. Make a simple plan for what you want to do on a PR map as CO.

2. If you downt have any other CO friends out there post parts or the whole plan in the Commanders forum here on the main site and ask for criticism from related players. Or ask players like my self or other CO´s if you can PM x of a plan in order to get some feedback.

3. Find a server with the map and attempt to execute it.

You have a massive proactive learning tool in front of you as PR CO. Please use it as such.

All the best
