I would tend to agree, the commander has become largely obsolete and I haven't seen any commanders in the games I played.

Mmmm? So you didn't know you can resign by bringing up the Squad/Kit selection screen with ENTER?

To argue that these changes were made for realism is baffling.

No field map unless in the command post; okay that's realistic, but then why does every other player on the team have access to a similar map at all times. That means pretty much everyone in the field has access to what is basically a Blue Force Tracker, and the commander doesn't unless he's in his box. If you take it from him, you should take if from everyone.

The Commander is now only essential for two things at this point:

1. allowing sqaud leaders to communicate to each other, which would be easier if he were at least allowed individual squad comms outside the CP, I mean come on, every marine can change radio channels in the field.

2. calling in artillery/mortars/JDAM, which in REALITY could be called in from anywhere over a radio.

The worst part is that these two things are pretty easy to live without, but if used properly can dramatically increase a teams effectiveness, and now they will be lived without because no one is going to want a job as a phone operator.

I'm very curious to here the motivations for these changes, as I really can't see any pros to them, only cons. The players before were right, there are no commanders in game anymore. At least allow us commanders to use out comms outside the CP, I hate Commanders who only use the commander channel all the time, and now that will be their only option if they want to get in the fight, and this will in turn reduce squad comms due to the SL being constantly interrupted by commander orders which don't apply to them...

I totally agree with the above comments - the commander should be able to access his comm screen pretty much anywhere you would find a field radio ie:
- Command Post
- Forward Outpost
- ANY Rally Point
- Supply/Command Trucks
- Back seat of an APC
- Possibly anywhere near a squad leader?

I'm still having problems with the talking to squad voip (do they need an officer kit or something - ie doesn't work for tank/apc squads) But generally that's a useful feature (though if the clicky sound worked it would be better)

Because of the whole squad system there no one really will want to spend time setting up defensive bases (squads leaders that can get officer kits will want to go kill stuff - squads leaders that can't, don't have enough members to make an effective unit) if the commander could still build stuff the 'spare' squad leaders and their few members can help construct stuff hence making defensive outposts really be viable. (I rarely find teams that will hang around at first or second flags to help build a full base so other squads can spawn closer to the front line) Allowing squad members to build without a commander works for <30 players on the server but more than that and the commander spot is just redundant for building purposes.

/rant but fix it please! (or I'll have to keep flying choppers to stay amused :P)

If anything the only thing lacking for a commander previously would have been a dedicated command vehicle and a shovel.

On the positive side, the game will no longer be lopsided when no commander is present.

Hotfix??

The only thing that should be added is allowing the commander to access his map from a command truck. Otherwise I like the new system.

You're forced to sit in the command post. And if there's nothing to be said and no orders to be given you're reduced to watching moving dots on the map. You can't even go out and put help put down a firebase because you won't be able to communicate with your team.

This is more realistic yea, but it's also boring as hell. After 10 minutes I felt like some customer service rep sitting in a cubicle with a headset and helping people fix their internet connection...

Proposed solution:
Let the commander access his map in commander trucks as well as in the command post.
That way the commander can be mobile and not have to sit on his ass the whole game.
loll, sadly true. I went commander for about an hour earlier, I was telling myself, there must be something wrong I'm doing... Is it really all about sitting in that command post and relying communication between squads ?

Relying coms between SL is important but doing it is boring. No matter why nobody ever play Commander.

Selecting a squad and pressing B to talk to em works. If they do not respond, its because they are lazy or the SL have no mic...

Well with the fewer special weapons available you should be playing a more strategy game than relaying orders. Now you only know wich squad had that LAT or HAT and you should order them around. Not let them figure out where to go.

This is a great change IMO. No more playing Bob The Builder

When im a commader I sit in the base an command. Yes I usually stare at the commanderscree for the entire round. When you have one of these quet moments and no one is talking, ask a squad about howthey are doing
