Smacks head. I'm gonna pass that around to all the 3dsmqax guys here. (joke)

Anyways, its not a grid as much as the topology of your object. Everything in 3d is made up of triangles. in your pics I see 25 triangles. So if you take one of these grid squares and change the vertices (as in moving around) the square will turn into a two triangles.

The only reason I bring this up is it will be very important which way these triangles lay when your done with you model.

Anyways they can be annoying but they are very important to see them.

Yea, pressing 'G' it removes the main grid, pressing F4 gives you the wireframe of your object, pressing F3 will remove the mat so you can just see the wireframe also, you can right click and hit object properties(?) and tick see through/transparent, makes it easier.

Sorry If I have made any obvious mistakes, Im just too tired to fire up the 'max.
