Talking Here's an even better fix!

Hey guys, I just reinstalled Windows 7 after upgrading to a larger hard drive. The same problem came back, but I was able to solve it again. My new solution is even better!

Since I forgot to move the location of My Documents to its usual resting place on my other partition, BF2 was trying to use its default resolution and was unable to start again. I had a hard time tracking this down (since I had all my Video.con files set to 75Hz in the location I thought it was using) so I started looking for a way to unlock 60Hz in my monitor.

It turns out, the reason Windows 7 is such a pain in the ass is because it strictly adheres to the EDID information, which is how the monitor tells the computer what resolutions and refresh rates it supports. Since the number of resolution/refresh combos that can be reported is very limited, most CRTs simply give a few choices and expect the operating system to interpolate the other options. Windows 7 doesn't do that, so you're stuck with the few choices explicitly defined.

There is a way to unlock your monitor's other modes in Windows 7! It is possible to install a new driver for the monitor which overrides the EDID information. It's fairly simple as long as you follow these directions very carefully:
Force DVI/HDMI resolutions and refresh rates - Windows 7 Forums

Using the Phoenix EDID Designer, I checked all the low-resolution 60Hz options under Established Timings and added a 1600x1200 60Hz option under Standard Timings. Now BF2 can start up properly even if I haven't tweaked Video.con.

you have to install 1.41 before 1.5
also make sure your 1.5 is not a beta release

i am not sure bit I think your PSU might not suffice (i wanted to get a similar pc and marked a 1000W PSU to go with it)

you should try clearing your bf2 profile so it gets reset to defaults as we had a lot of reports about corrupted config files since .9 patch (delete "My Documents\Battlefield 2" (it will get recreated with defaults)

With a fresh install on Windows 7 - 64 bit I have read two different install steps. Before the new two part 09 update I know you had to install the core and the levels after BF2 patch 1.5 but now that the 09 part 1 and 2 is out do I still need the core and levels install?
I have tried it both ways and still get the pr.exe stopped working message.

I know this is elementary but thanks.

Hey,

i have something like that. So here's the problem, i had the same specs except it was 4gb of ram, same type of ram. I added the extra 4 GB and turned on my PC loaded PR and it loads the game, same settings, i am able to log on and see the server, but as soon as i click to load a map, it crashes to desktop.

These are my specs:
Intel Core i5 750 @ 2.67GHz, 2.67GHz
8.00 GB RAM DDR3 (CORSAIR XMS 3)
N260GTX (896MB DDR3)
X-Raider 7.1

I tried many options of troubleshooting, including removing the new ram. I decided to do a whip of my C: and reinstall windows 7 64, it worked for the first load, then i went to go and change my options, it went back to crashing on map load up.

This has been going on for quite some time now, and has become extremely annoying

Thanks

I am glad you both are trying to find your solution in already exsisting threads. But both of you should have searched a bit more thoroughly.

@Shep: your problem is actually similar but quite common, you should try all the steps the op tried, after that failed you should post.
(you probably just need to run PR as Administrator)

update: shep got it figured out:

I tried changing the target path and in the end and corrected punk buster also and I got it running and it runs great.

@matt75:This is not the thread you should be posting your CTD-on-map-load problem. Both problems AND symptoms are quite different.
(Solution is to reduce texture and lighting setting to "medium")

Locking this to stop obscuring the actual solution to the ops problem which was mentioned here: http://www.realitymod.com/forum/f27-...ml#post1227530

Please find more appropriate threads or open one yourself.
