It could help if you disable any programs in the background, especially virus scans etc. Cores don't have any effect, I never understood what the disabling cores did for bf2 as when ever I disable my second core in bf2 I just get 15 less fps the game never ran any better.

Try disabling anything that isn't needed by windows or bf2. even if the program seems to be harmless and really does nothing it could still be conflicting. Have you tried to reinstall PB it could just be that it is corrupted.

Read some guides on services and startup items to help free up memory and CPU usage. It really does help. Lots of programs like to through a process in the background to help "speed" up their access but given how fast most computers are it isn't really needed.

You could use Hijackthis to see what is starting up and disable anything that is unneeded.
