Default PR Gaming Rig

Hello,

I really love playing Project Reality and think it rivals all other games but the trouble I am having is that my current computer is not able to run PR very well.

Current Computer:
- P4 3ghz (non ht) 478
- 2gb DDR3200
- 80gb ide
- ATI x1950pro 512mb

Currently I run the game at 800x600, everything on low or off and it still shudders/lags/crash to desktop.
Also currently the CPU bottlenecks the ATI x1950pro.
So what I am going to do is make a new PC.
Retire the old girl to a file server or something.....

This is what I am looking at for my new PC.

Now.....
- I will be replacing all fans with Noctua ones as they are very quiet except the 140mm scythe one. Will also have them controlled by the Zalman Fan Controller.
- Although the NH-U12P SE1366 CPU cooler is designed for Intel i7 CPU's, it also includes both Intel 775 and AMD 2+ (am3) brackets.
- I am not sure when the new 3ghz AM3 Phenom 2 x4 995 quadcore CPU is coming, the rumors state 20th april so over the next few weeks as I get the items Ill leave the CPU to last hoping the new 3ghz quadcore AM3 cpu will come out by then.
- The Nvidia 285 2gb states it needs 550w PSU or better, Do you think the Corsair 750w PSU is an overkill? But that said, would a Corsair 620 be able to keep up?
- I am looking at overclock this rig and given that I live in a hot climate cooling is a big priority.
- This rig so far is costing under 2k, I wish to keep it there.
- I have an 19" widescreen (1440x900) monitor and want to run at max everything on PR. No exceptions! Maximum eyecandy! I have been having to play all games on low for way too long! Anyway I think I deserve a good pc for once.

Any constructive comments would be highly welcomed.

Thanks.

lol, that was also a major reason why im building my first rig also :P
That would definably play PR on max.
noctua is good too, my list has the 92mm version though cause of the cost.

It's a crossfire motherboard - an ATI card would be a better option imo

Hello,

From what I read, the ATI Crossfire SLI support is ONLY enabled if Duel ATI Crossfire enabled graphic cards are installed.
If a non ATI Graphics card is installed, the ATI Crossfire SLI mode will be disable thus making it a standard PCI-E 16x Graphic Card slot.
So in closing, using an Nvidia card will make no difference to the performance unless I am willing to run duel Crossfire SLI enabled ATI graphic cards.

Although ATI are a good card company and have one currently in my old pc, I would like to give Nvidia a try and as such the Nvidia 285 2gb is currently the most fastest/biggest single graphic card card available.

(Nvidia 295 = 2x260 and ATI 4870x2 = 2x4870 on the one board, these are not a SINGLE graphic card but two smaller mixed together to make one. So please don't correct my above statement about the Nvidia 285 2gb being fastest single graphic card)

Thanks.

If you're getting that many fans why not get watercooling?

Hello,

Water cooling parts costs a hell lot more than 5 fans do.

Thanks.

Yea. Are you getting(have) a diff hdd for the O/S? Just a 80Gb or something for the O/S that way if one goes out you're not completely boned.

Hello,

Due to price constraints, only one hard drive will do.
The PC will be only used for gaming, thus 150gb raptor will be more than sufficient.

Thanks.

all this crossfire and SLI stuff isn't much to worry about imho. if you want to boost performance buy a better gfx card instead of adding a new one. cheaper, more stable and faster

Just for your info.. i have a x1950pro and it plays PR on all High settings with no lag and good fps.

So if you want to save some dollars.. dont bother upgrading it... it'll run PR no probs if you upgrade other elements of your PC.
