Default My shadows aren't very good

http://screenshot.xfire.com/screensh...c4bbcf7e7e.png

ATI 4870

(btw, ignore all my previous problems with crashes etc, thats all fixed, I tried everything, but textures on medium is the only thing that gives me reliable gaming /sad panda)

I've shoved the ATI control center settings every which way, why can't I get these shadows smoother?

I'm running at 140fps with fpsunlock everything on high except textures. x8 anti aliasing

ETW etc run on Ultra with no problems.

any1 encountered this issue?

sometimes they look fine...

The 1st one looks like AA is disabled, but you say it's x8.
Ati has different filters for the AA like:box,narrow-tent,wide-tent and edge-detect.
I use the box and check mark for application settings in Cat.control centre.

i suggest you to switch AA to x4, seems like ATI drivers have some issues when its set higher(AA just dont work))

Yeah I'll try that, AA was on, the edges of objects are really smooth, just the shadows are borked.

I'll try that at the same time

Yeah, I did. I'm using the EA download version, I'll try the disk version soon.

no joy, I turned my shadows on low and they actually look the same.

Maybe I can force them on high somehow?

I think there's nothing you can do about it. If I've understand correctly, it's a problem related to BF2 as I've seen similar jagged edges in vanilla too. It has something to do with the technology called shadow mapping, but I don't know enough about rendering technologies to give you more precise answer.

I have a HD4870 as well, and i've always had the Blockey Shadows, mainly cause i thought they were meant to be like that. Doesn't really bother me atm

About that shadow of the soldier. Me and mora found out something that the shadow looked perfect facing one way, then looked blocky if you moved and looked from another direction.

But also, have you tried putting anisotropic filtering on 16x?

Looked in to it, ATI has that odd shadow rendering system, I think its that.

Should have got nVidia
