Default Extreme Ping

Hey,

Hope you guys can help but some random guy picked off the street who read off a script (Also known as AOL 'Support') Gave me some really rubbish advice.

Basically a few weeks ago my ping suddenly starte rgoing to about 800 (Sometimes hitting 1000) I hardly get any lag, I also got a new computer, but it was bad before that as well. Ive tried most things, like restarting router etc.

We did move the opohnes and that helped, but we went away and restarted the router and it came back again.

Sounds like a weird problem but could it be the fact that you are using America online and you are in England?

I'd bet it's AOL related.

I live in the UK, and AOL hasnt been my nbest friend

I now use virgin media

Cheaper, better, and easier than AOL. Plus virgin media is the only Ip in the UK which goes up to 50meg. I use 20 meg, and AOL don't even go that high! (I think)

Ya i really suggest you change your internet provider, I can't even believe people across the pond use America online... People in America don't even use AOL I think we just know better and they haven't completely screwed over the Europeans yet so they started up.

Run some tests.
Tweaking your TCP stack can help

Remember it is recommended that you restart your system after you install/uninstall programs to ensure all installed components, files and registry entries are correctly installed or removed.
So it is key you restart after using pbsvc uninstall.

Some routers with 'packet inspection' turned on can also trigger a disconnect when game data or voip traffic triggers a false "ping flood"attack and the router shuts down needed ports to protect your network.
So try turning packet inspection off to see if that helps.
If you have a busy network you can also get dropped if your packets are consistently getting delayed due to high traffic.( your ping jumps way up from time to time)
If your running Xp you can tune up your internet connection with TCP Optimizer to maximize throughput.
check out speed guides web site
click here to use their TCP/IP Analyzer
results will show if you can improve throughput.

Having a router like D-links gamers lounge, that can prioritize traffic( they call it GameFuel), can make a night and day difference.
This GameFuel improves your online gaming experience by ensuring that your game traffic is prioritized over other network traffic, such as FTP or Web. This is of course much more helpful on networks with more than one user, but if you like to download bit torret or other large files in the background while gaming you'll be glad you have one that can prioritize or 'shape' traffic.

good luck

Perhaps you could post the results from the TCP/IP analyzer tests
for us?
What was the advice AOL tech gave you?
You said"We did move the opohnes and that helped, but we went away and restarted the router and it came back again."
I haven't a clue what your talking about what is 'opohnes'.
Have you updated all your drivers/?
