hey guys .. wats up ?
now for awhile ive been using the new Dell XPS M1530 and its pretty bad ass , i can handle all the new games with High Graphics and excellent FPS's . when i first got it the laptop didnt heat up for about a week or 2 and now the Temp goes up to 220F when im playing games .. me and my friend Rezza were talking and i wanted to cool it down without paying money , so i got a wallmart bag and i filled it up with Ice and i made sure its closed and stuck it under the laptop and went for a round in Muttrah and the performance was 500% better and i could actuelly put my wrist on the laptop when i play without getting my hand on fire , lol . after an hour i realised that my pants were cold and i couldnt actually feel my legs anymore LOL . so in the end what solutions that can be done without spending those 50 bucks ? any idea's on how to cool it down without making a mess out of it .. if so please do share ur thoughts ! and oh if nothing else is found for a cost free solution what do u recommend for a cooling table for the laptop ? Thanks |

Aren't there these gel pads under laptops?
Supposedly they help with heat distribution so they could help cool it down a bit. Anyways, this is why people say laptops aren't made for gaming - too much cheat production and too little space for it to go |

Temperature of 220F(104C) is by all means not normal for a laptop GPU. In fact, anything above 90C should be considered a concern. The XPS M1530 is equipped with a Geforce 8600M GT DDR3 which runs under he G84 architecture. Both the G84 and G86 graphics cards were announced by Nvidia to be part of the defective line and are known to overheat and downclock, until eventually they fail. I suggest you contact Dell and ask for a replacement even if your warranty might have expired.

I have mt laptop sitting of 4 erasers, one in each corner. This allows the air to get out the vent thing easier and actually drops about 10C of the temperature.

Without a cooling pad or something, laptop cooling isn't easy.I use a laptop too and tried so many things about cooling but a cooler pad solved all problems. With cooler pad i use my desktop's monitor and i bought a USB keyboard. After all these no more shutdowns and overheatings. So i suggest a cooler pad.

In general laptops can be improved cooling wise by a no. of measures. (n.b. if you screw up your warrenty or the laptop goes pop after following these instructions, don't come to me complaining
*mainly for those people who don't have a warranty anymore* 1. Ensure that your laptop insides are completely free from dust. If you don't know how to take apart your machine, go and learn. Learn on old broken kit if you have no idea at all. Ensure the dust exits out of your venting on your machine, don't blow it around without taking it to bits. The usual air-cans or vacuums can be used, but watch anti-static. 2. Cheap GPU heat-pads can be replaced by "high-performance" heat-pads. Always use well documented measures to clean off old glue/compound etc if necessary. 3. Always take care if you take your laptop apart to ensure good contact, with any cooling hardware in the machine. 4. Use a good hardware monitoring program (I like HWmonitor personally) to make sure your improvements don't make things worse. 5. Situate your laptop somewhere sensible, in a room with a low (below 25 deg. ambient temperature. The lower the better. 6. Do some research, and perhaps mod your laptop if you are that way inclined. You may find some good modding information on www.overclock.net 7. Think hard whether a laptop is the best/only solution for your gfx intense gaming if you suffer local high temps - you may be a lot better off with a conventional desktop machine. 8. Utilise any available energy saving features of your laptop, this is very useful for managing temperature in the same way as desktops. |
