CTD at 1% entering a level

I recently got a friends to download PR core + levels as my download speeds are rubbish.

i installed core, then levels, started the game using the shortcut(which has the correct target/start in) and changed my resolution to 1024*768 and proceeded to join a server.

i chose a server and clicked deploy, it would get to 1% then CTD. i have tried some fixes that have been thought of previously, but it just wont work.

i tried running it in windowed mode but when i join a server i get the following screen:


i checked the file path objects\effects\textures\ but i didnt have the animated folder.


current pc specs are:
Vista 64bit with UAC turned off
Nvidia 8800gt 512mb
2 GB ram
Intel core 2 duo E7200 @ 2.53 ghz

Previous fixes tried:
Changing resolution
using the extra parameters +fullscreen 0 +szx 1024 +szy 768
Changing textures to medium

This seems to be fairly common. Is anim_VFire not used in some builds of BF2 and thus removed? I can't see how this one file packed in a zip file is missing on numerous people's BF2 install.

At any rate, what you can do is copy anim_VFire from another BF2 install into yours and it should resolve the problem.

Did you forget the updater?
Quick check list:
BF2 installed
All earlier PR versions and desktop shortcuts deleted


Full 1.41 BF2 updater
PR 8 uses TWO installers
#1 Core installed FULL ( create desktop short checked)
#2 levels(maps) installed
(Vista users need to set compatibility mode to xp and run as admin)
running game at 1024x768 res or higher same as your desktop.

punk buster uninstalled with pbsvc
reboot before reinstalling punk buster files with pbsvc( if your using Vista DO NOT set compatibility to XP, run as admin ok)
run pbsvc test/get all green on test
update bunk buster files with pbsetup
Make sure your firewall has permission for:

BF2.EXE
PBSETUP.EXE
(search for your location)

PNKBSTRA.EXE
path:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSWOW64\PNKBSTRA.EXE
or (not 100% sure but for 32 bit O/S I think it's)C:\WINDOWS\SYSWOW32\PNKBSTRA.EXE
