It's out guys. That will fix your slowdowns on Project Reality and crashes between map changes on PR and BF2.
Here is the article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940105 Since these are pre-release hotfixes, request it directly with Microsoft here: https://support.microsoft.com/contac...1410&WS=hotfix Microsoft info: As developers harness the new graphics capabilities in Windows Vista, some changes in how Windows Vista manages video memory have resulted in sporadic issues in graphically taxing games with high-end video cards. Working closely with our hardware partners, we have developed a fix which is currently available online. We encourage users to go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940105 for the update which will resolve this issue. Q: If Windows Vista was built from the ground up with games in mind, why didn’t you foresee the issue and address the 2GB barrier before? A: As developers harness the new graphics capabilities in Windows Vista, some changes in how Windows Vista manages video memory have resulted in some issues in games with high-end video cards. We have been working very closely with our hardware partners and have developed a fix which will be available online. Q: What will gamers experience to know that they are dealing with the video memory issue? A: Often times this will manifest itself when a user tries to play the game when pushing the limit of the game capabilities in terms of texture quality and screen resolution. Q: Will this be an issue with every game I play on Windows Vista that requires running a high end video card? A: No. However, we have been working very closely with our hardware partners and have developed a fix which will be available on line. Once you have installed the fix, there should be no additional issues. Q: Where can we obtain the fix? A: The Quick Fix Executable (QFE) will be available for download at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940105 on 8/23. Prior to that date, anyone can call PSS referring the KB number (KB940105) and ask for the QFE package which will be made available free of cost to the consumer. Q: Will this QFE be included in Service Pack 1 and when can we expect the release? A: There will be a Windows Vista service pack and our current expectation is that a beta will be made available sometime this year. Service packs are part of the traditional software lifecycle — they’re something we do for all Microsoft products as part of our commitment to continuous improvement, and providing early test builds is a standard practice that helps us incorporate customer feedback and improve the overall quality of the product. Service packs are just one example of the work we do to constantly improve the Windows experience. We also deliver improvements to Windows via Windows Update, which is an excellent channel for providing our customers with the most significant updates as they happen. And, since Windows Vista launched, we have continued working with partners to improve overall device coverage and application compatibility. There are now more than 2.1 million supported devices and more than 2,000 logoed applications for Windows Vista. We think customers will have a great experience using Windows Vista today. Hope that it fixes your PR experience ! Over and out, Chris |

It's going to be cool when the Vista beta is finally done some day. I might check it out when it gets out of the beta stage.

Yo, Mr N0b. Go check your update history on XP....
You must think of XP as an early Alpha product if a piece of software gets called beta when something gets updated. 77 CRITICAL updates since SP2....LOL [edit] Your request was successfully submitted to Microsoft. A Microsoft Professional will respond to you via e-mail within 8 business hours. great...... |

Hmmmmmz, problem solved!
Without the help of this patch though.... As soon as I installed the latest Intel chipset drivers, my problems were gone. |

Yeah I'd like to run Vista. Not because I want to but because my current XP installation is coming up to that 1 year mark where it's all screwed up and is almost time for a re-install.
I'd much prefer to install Vista but it's just way too beta for me to bother with. I recently bought a MacBook Pro and I gotta say that OS X is a fantastic productivity OS. I am heading out to my parent's place this evening to remove Vista from my Dad's PC and replace it with XP cuz Vista is driving him crazy. |

Eggman, I run Vista x64 without any problems. What kind of problems you have when using it ?
One of the last issues to be solved for me was this memory addressing one. I previously used a modified BF2.exe and PR was fine. Now I don't even need it. |

audio drivers don't support the full features of my 200$ card.
video drivers give me about 65% of the frame rates versus XP (althou NVidia has released new drivers that I have not tried) RAM usage is appalling.. with 2GB under XP my machine can get annoyingly slow (lots of HD access when running a bunch of mod dev tools concurrently). Under Vista it was unbearable and I need to toss in another 2GB of RAM (4 total) to get performance like I have with XP is the conclusion I have drawn. I had more BSODs in the 10 days or so I ran Vista than I have had with XP on the same machine in months. Not really complaining... I have it on a dual boot partition simply because I knew it would be shite, but I did expect that it would be more solid and have broader driver support than I experienced. Am waiting on a service pack and better drivers before I give it another go. |
