Hey Guys !
I hate to make my first post a technical question so let me introduce myself. You may have seen me in the servers lately. I am a long time BF 1942 / battlefield 2 player and I gotta say Project Reality is what Battlefield 2 should have been. I had quit playing Battlefield lately because of the repetitive non-tactical run and gun style of game play. I had of course heard of Project Reality.I never knew that it was pretty much a full game in it's own right, which it most certainly is. This leads me to my technical problem because I am hooked to PR and will continue to play regardless of this annoying CTD issue but I hope to get it resolved. I have provided some information on my setup and the crash below. I you have any questions, please let me know. Crash to Desktop : ![]() I built my own gaming PC and the thing has been flawless except when it comes to PR. Here is some technical information on the issue below. Technical Information : Project Reality crashes to desktop when going from one map to another. It never crashes when first loading a map but there is a 65% estimated chance of a crash when moving from a map to another map. PR never crashes when in game , this issue only happens during loading. Battlefield 2 itself runs perfectly and does not have any CTD errors. Based on the error message, it seems to be an memory allocation issue of some sort. It's almost like the maps are so large in PR that it cant unload one and load another in the alloted memory space. I have tried increasing virtual memory as stated below but it did not help. Regardless this should not be an issue on my machine. System Setup : OS : Windows Vista 32-bit (new install) Memory : 2 gig Video Card : 8800 GTX(169.25) CTD error message : memory.dll: all alloc attempts failed for size Attempted Fixes :
Any solid leads on fixing this issue would be appreciated ! Thanks |

You have a PC very similar to mine(except I have an extra gig of RAM).
I assume you did all the nessesary admin stuff with the shortcut? (Sorry I'm not that helpful, but since your PC is similar to mine, and mine runs fine, I can't see the problem) |

I think I know what you need to do. Search the fourms cause I had the same problem when I built my new rig.
Has something to do with a memory leak in BF2 and the lighting setting. All you have to do is set lighting to Med. setting, and won't happen any more (stopped right away for me). If you look at the tweakguides.com BF2 guide, there is hardly any noticeable difference between MED and HIGH anyway. |

Although that extra gig'o'ram wouldn't hurt, you may test my install procedure, since I had same error occuring on one of my previous Vista64 setups.
http://www.realitymod.com/forum/f27-...ion-steps.html I'm quite certain that could apply for 32bit Vista as well. My fresh Vista64SP1 install didn+t need any patching, hotfixing, and according to my tradition, I've turned off services mentioned in that thread, with an exemption of defender service which is started, but turned off in defender options, b/c mf would pop-up error dialogue wanting for it's missing data on every boot... Other than that, you could check if power settings are set to desktop/high performance mode, and while there turn off disk sleep...your disks will still go to sleep after a period of time, try to get a closer look at hard disk activity, in periods of failure. That's what I could think of now. hth. V64sp1/C2Quad Q6600@2.40/4Gb/8800GT512Mb/iP35 @ 1920x1200/8xAF |

Yeah, sorry, was running late for work and posted what it sounded like from your first statement of the problem, as it fixed me and another squad mate.
Have you tried cutting settings down all to MED, play a couple of rounds, and see if it crashes. Also, you will notice a huge difference in your rig if you move up to 4 gigs. And right now you can get really good 2gigs of RAM for $30. I ran with 2 gigs on Vista 64, then went to 4 gigs and it was a huge difference. Not bad for $30 after rebates. By the way, the memory leak thing still happens some times. I have looked at the memory monitor in my side LCD and have been using 2.8 gigs before, just playing PR. It started low, and slowly moved up. |

I will try putting all settings to medium for a game or two to see if it makes a difference. This is probably a safe bet and a good suggestion. What confuses me about this problem is that it is so specific to PR. There seems to be no logical reason why I should have the issue when others with Vista who are running project reality do not. My system has no global gaming or application crashes whatsoever and it's very narrowed to that period of loading the next map As to upgrading the memory ,I am currently running water cooled pc-9200 OCZ FLEX XLC memory. The 2 gigs in my system now cost me $450 when I built my system. While this is great for gaming, it causes issues with leisurely upgrading my ram. I have thought about upgrading but adding the cheap stuff would actually cause a bottleneck and if anything would just slow me down. | |

That RAM is now about $115, but I know what you mean about RAM.
I am running Corsair Dominator 1066, and it was $200 per 2gig kit when I bought it. Now, you can get the 2 gig kits I have for $50 apiece or the 4 gig kit with cooling fan for $139. Would be interesting to just get/borrow 2 more gigs and install just to see if the crashing stopped. As far as community goes, you should check out TacticalGamer.com. I had a look around the site and realized how mature it was, and with it a forum that you actually want to post in. I spend most of my time in the Hardware forums: Hardware & Software Discussion - Tactical Gamer We have had a few threads about water cooling recently you might want to check out. |
