Your video card should have options to monitor heat. If not, there are several free programs on the internet you can use, just google it. There are graph style monitors that allow you to track all heat history and others that overlay heat info while you are playing. Generally speaking, your heat shouldn't go above about 75 degrees Celsius (160 degrees Fahrenheit) otherwise severe slowdowns are significantly increased.

Had a few people with that problem as well in our servers. Check your video settings. If it is set to 800x600 the game will crash to desk top with no reason why. Crank it up a bit and give that a try. Hope that helps.
