I don't know how this stuff happens, I think it could be related to heat and my mom not getting the AC fixed in our house for over a year now.
Whenever I turn on my computer [at home] the screen is covered in red lines, flickering etc. I don't know what caused it initially because it happened the very first time I turned it on when I got home, and my mom says she knows nothing of it. They cover the entire screen and they appear the moment the windows XP start up screen starts. Nothing I do makes them go away and it seems the temp inside isn't that bad, I have even cooled it down so I think this is some sort of permanent damage from he heat while I was away? I hope not, but I need some insight into the problem before I go pay for repairs when we are totally broke here... I don't have the internet at home however so, I don't know when I can check this thread again, probably within the next day or so though. Thanks for any help dudes. |

Re: Red lines all the time on screen.
Could be your graphics card on its way out. Also a dodgy PSU giving up the ghost. When did you last clean the guts of your PC? Could be a build up of dust and dirt inside causing a short circuit some where. CPU heatsinks are a bugger for trapping dust.

Re: Red lines all the time on screen.
Have you got a CRT or TFT screen? How old is it?

Re: Red lines all the time on screen.
Check your VGA cable connections, if this is not the reason I'm suggesting you to turn off computer immediately cause your graphic card is dying at the moment and that is wise to prevent more hardware failures.

Re: Red lines all the time on screen.
Thanks for the quick replies.
It is a TFT screen. The screen and PC are about 3.5 years old. I have tried messing with all my graphics settings everywhere, nothing changed it the slightest. The PC has been thoroughly dusted out all the fans I can tell are working fine. I will check the cable connections when I get home. The PC has been off since last night, I assumed leaving it on would be bad for it, so thats ok for the moment... |

Re: Red lines all the time on screen.
probably the monitor. i had an LCD screen last about...2.5/3 years and then crapped out on me. Hadhorizontal colored lines across the screen. Got really bad too, kept getting worse, would then flicker and turn off... then eventually wouldnt turn on..
At least, thats my guess... Just get a decent priced LCD screen if it ends up the problem That or it is, in fact, your card going out. But if it is, its perm damage since its doing it RIGHT when you turn on the PC. I once had a card go out on me, but it worked just fine in normal windows running mode, but once I got in game I got artifacts all over the screen.. Sorry I cant help more.. One thing: try uninstalling and removing your graphics card and running without it. That might show whether its the monitor or the card. Or the easier way: plug your monitor into a working PC and see if it gets the lines... then youll know for sure whether its the card or the monitor |

I have two PCs, but not 2 monitors, I thought I was going to have to borrow a screen or something lol... So if the screen works on the other PC, what should I then do?

In which case, its your monitor and youll probably just have to buy a new one. If the red lines dont show up, its probably your graphics card on the first PC and youll need a new one of them... Either way, looks like youll have to buy one or the other :\
