No you don't have to. There is a tool called Driver Cleaner.

Install it, select the ATI drivers and hit Accept (or something like that). Then reboot your computer and install the new drivers.

and delete the video cache for BF2 before starting it up again! You might have to do the same for every game you've got.

Easiest in XP to go Start/My Documents and delete the entire Battlefield2 folder and reset up everything from scratch again

Just make sure you use the latest (8.7) Catalyst,it has improvements
specifically for the 4850. Don't worry about anything else too much unless
there is a problem.Don't "fix it" if it ain't broken.

Well but it has to be done. I mean deleting the old drivers and the video cache like MrD said.

Re: Must I Format Windows After Buying A New Graphics Card?

I've done this many times:
turned the PC off take out the 3850/3870 put in the old X800 boot up,
the Catalyst will pop an error saying "your card is not supported"....etc

I reboot and everything works,no errors no new drivers.
Same thing again in the opposite order:
turn off take out the x800 put in a 3850 boot, reboot
done.

However if you want to be certain by all means go ahead and dump the old
drivers. All the recent Catalyst drivers come "unified" meaning
that a single catalyst release actually carries all drivers for all
(ati) video cards. That why the size is 40mb+ (most of it is Catalyst Control Center)CCC

As far as I know BF2 is the only game with this dumb system.

Most of the other games take care of those things automatically.

Turn 360 degrees and walk away is what you should do tbh.
