Got $69 bucks to spare? I just saw this for Socket AM2:
AMD black edition 2.6 Mz
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Black Edition Processor ADO5000DSWOF -
2.60GHz, 1MB Cache, 1000MHz (2000 MT/s) FSB, Brisbane,
Dual-Core, Retail,
Socket AM2 (940), Processor -
No Fan

Check out this site for overclocking ideas if you have a 939 like me.
Here is a 4400 clocked to 2500

Replacing the cpu is easy and for the most part strait forward, but getting the heat sink clip on on can be tricky. It only takes one slip up to do do some damage.
If you don't know someone with experience who can help you get through it, take it in to the shop. Many times if they aren't busy the tech might let you watch him so you could learn how it's done AND what to look out for so you don't screw the pooch. Keep your new parts in the boxes unopened when you go to the shop. Call ahead to find out if you can watch and the best time (when he's slow) to come in.
Replacing the cpu and video card should be half an hour to 45 minuets. Blow the case out/clean it well before you take it in(like brushing you teeth before the dentist)
If you can't watch the install, just go to a movie or something and pick it up on your way home.

Your lucky you have a AM2 motherboard. That
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Black Edition is a good deal. The black Editions are unlocked for easy overclocking, but just between you and me I think 2.6 Mz is plenty fast enough.

Anyway good luck

I'd go for an 8800GT. They are usually better, and you can get them for cheaper. Mine was $130 for an EVGA 8800GT after Mail-in-rebate. Plays Crysis on High/

Re: Overclocking Cpu

Im in the same situation hardwarewise. What im gonna do is:
1.Just like you, check if the CPU rly is the bottleneck.
2.If it is, or no, anyway, ill replace my case fans with new, silent ones and get a professional airflow going.
3.I try to overclock(when i tested it once with the software that came with my mainboard it worked pretty good). If it doesnt work too well, ill consider getting a better CPU Fan( Sythe Kama Cross e.g.)

I dont think it would be too wise to invest a lot of money for a CPU of an extinct generation. Id rather wait for a while til i could afford rebuilding my system completely.

Tofurkeymeister, yes, for a while now nvidia has dominated the gpu market, but the new 4850 and 4870 totally own Nvidia, especially from a budget-buyers point of view.

Re: Overclocking Cpu

Guys The Hd 4850 is better then those cards you suggested check some benchmarks and blend its 2.3 ghz per core i saw videos on youtube a guy plays grid with a amd 3800+ (slower cpu then mine amd x2 4400+) he has 2 gigs of ram and plays grid on 40 frames per second everything on high he even records it with fraps 30 fps record i saw anothervideo a guy playin crysis with the same hardware but the cpu is the amd 4000+ and he plays everything on high the graphics are great and there is no lag so what i get from this is i ll get the hd 4850 test if it s ok well the internet says its really ok crysis is the measurement because its high quality graphics. If it works on Crysis High 40-60 Fps then it works on all other games too.Fırst i ll get it and check if i have problems i ll try to overclock and get a new good fan.If i cant get a new fan or cant overclock or the cpu gets too hot (no overclock 50-60 celcius full load). Then i will get a new cpu from the old generation.I have 2 years from now on then i will use laptop not the desktop.

It's much, much better to have a better Video card and a "slower" cpu, then a faster
cpu and a slower video card You made the right choice 4850 is the best bang for the $
