Re: B U R N O U T
Quote:
The simple instructions call for a power hookup but the card does not have a plug that matches it. I pulled the sound card out thinking if I am 2 amps short of the 9600 requirements maybe the sound card is power starved too. That did nothing, I am plugged into the onboard sound and have no sound, properties shows no audio device. I searched for Nvidia and dumped a few more folders then reinstalled the drivers from the CD that came with the new card. Nothing. When I replaced the PSU 2 something years ago ( when I got the 6600GT ) I just replaced plug by plug from the old power supply. I have more than one empty connection on the wiring harness and some of them look like they would fit the the T-connector that came with the new card but there is nothing to plug it into. There is a tiny white connecter with 2 pins and a part with gold lines on it that looks like the part that plugs into the PCI E slot only much smaller but nothing that will take the power plug that came with it. The 6600 had a similiar set up and I had nothing connected to that. I did the monitor adaptor thing and it shows the 9600 as my selection. I will probably have to take it to Best Buy and have them test the power supply because I don't know what else it could be. The maching seems to work fine in safe mode but it won't load PR or AIX ( only games I have on it now ). Thanks again, I will keep fooling with it until it breaks I guess ...............LOL | |

Re: B U R N O U T
Ok I will re-phase the question with Pictures
Is this on your 9600 GT (should be on the back): http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/images...BGjn_1_7_l.jpg Have you plugged the connector on shown on the right below into it or do you have the 6 pin? http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/images...Gjn_1_10_l.jpg The connectors you were on about is it this one? http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/images...BGjn_1_8_l.jpg If so leave them alone! lol. Nothing to do with power only SLI and Aux fan power I think. But seriously though have you tried removing the drivers via device manager this time and re-installing? As I had a very similar problem with my last card entering safe mode all the time. |

Re: B U R N O U T
I know see the connectors.
But which wires to connect to the Y-splitter thing ? Anything that fits ? I have removed everything of the old card and software and the device manager registers the 9600 as my video. I will now power down and see what wires will fit where. Will advise. TYVM |

Re: B U R N O U T
Lucky I have a spare PSU to hand (very sad I know
![]() But pretty much any two of these, however if you have multiple devices plugged into the the same line it will reduce the power available to your graphics card. So try to use a spare line if you have one. Your card will need the extra power connectors in order to function correctly as the PCIe slot only supplies about 50% of the power if that. |

Re: B U R N O U T
Well I found to that will fit on the same line and hooked them up.
Guess what ? Nothing Nada I deleted the drivers, which were new ones, and reinstalled again, to no avail. But, if I am only delivering 26 amps and it needs 28 then that might be the problem, more so if my psu is not delivering all 26A it is rated for. But I still have no sound even with the sound card removed and the headphones plugged into the onboard sound card. When I try to check through the control panel it tells me status is unknown in Safe mode. I am going to try a windows update and see what that does because I don't understand why I don't have sound even if the GPU is underpowered. Thanks again and I'll keep plugging because it is 3 days with no PR now and I'm starting to twitch. |

Re: B U R N O U T
Very odd
Erm, I think it's a regulation but what does the output sticker on your PSU say? Should give information for the combined amperage and wattage on the +12V/+5V rails and what is the total Wattage of your PSU? I think you should be able to run it with a 26A PSU of about 400-500W, if the wattage is less than that it affects how it can be split up (as P=IV). That's why the newer PSU's have extra dedicated 12V rails with the 6 pin connectors. Although I thought the newer 9k series was less power hungry. Finally try this link and calculate just how much power you need or post detail PC specs, sadly you need the pro version to calculate the amperage: http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp |

Re: B U R N O U T
I'm not sure I filled it out right but it is giving me 171 watts and I know the 128mh 6600 asked for a 450w PSU, which is what I have.
But the guy on the nVidia help line said the 9600 needs 28Amps and my PSU says it only has 26 to offer. |

Re: B U R N O U T
I'm stumped
I think you should just be able to run the card although Nvidia states the min is a 450W supply this is just be playing safe as it should provide loads of headroom for the amperage require for the card which isn't too great: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...t,1780-18.html When you go into device manager as before can you see your sound card on the list? |

Re: B U R N O U T
I removed the Audigy sound blaster card and the device manager gives me the " can't check status in safe mode" message.
I am unhappy with my toy at the moment but it's getting late and I will just have to wait until I can get some one who knows to actually physically look at the thing. I have a feeling there is something simple I overlooked but who knows. Maybe it's the 2 amps or maybe it's how I plugged it in...very frustrating Thanks for your help and I will let you know what happens because I will get this thing to work. |

Re: B U R N O U T
I just had a brainwave, lol
Restarted my PC in safe mode as I forgot audio drivers aren't initialised in safe mode (silly me Only problem is how to get you out of safe mode...When you restart your PC you see the (3?) options including to start Windows normally? What happens when you try to do that, or is the option not available? If it is not available you can press and hold F8 as your PC starts up to select the launch options for windows and select normal start up but you might crash. Another way to force this is while in safe mode click Start > Run and enter MSCONFIG, you should be able to set the launch options there too. |
