Re: Completely random CTDs

I thought PB reinstall fixed it... but no, just got a crash on kashan.

Does anyone have ANY solution that worked for them?

Edit: If the PB handshaking problem and this is related, someone on taticall gamer said to do this:

Re: PunkBuster communication error handshaking failed
I 'm getting it every single day since I came back from vacation (last week). I simply launch the PnkBstrB.exe before I launch PR (can be found under "c:\Program Files\EA Games\Battlefield 2\pb" if you installed in the default dir). If everything goes well, you 'll see a command prompt for a sec which then closes again. If it remains open it won't work and then you might have to launch the games first into the menu and close it again.

Works everytime for me...
Im gonna try it.

That's a different problem, but try it anyway.

My best suggestion is to use Windows XP x64 as it seems to
keep the PB (which is a 32bit process) under fast ropes

Make sure you reboot after uninstalling pb with pbsvc.

Again run the pb test
if it isn't all green
use pbsvc to uninstall punk buster
reboot to be on the safe side
reinstall pbsetup with pbsvc
run pbsetup to update your games that use pb

rerun test
all green your good to go

if not:

Make sure your firewall has permission for:

PBSETUP.EXE
(search for your location)

PNKBSTRA.EXE
path:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSWOW64\PNKBSTRA.EXE

PnkBstrB.exe
path:
"C:\Users\"your user name here"\AppData\Roaming\PnkBstrB.exe"

I copied the PnkBstrB.exe name and location from the pbsvc "test'. The text of the test is behind the results window that pops up after the test. Use the copy button and save it to a text file for future reference.

Hope it helps

As we have clearly stated many times PaleRider, your copypasta fixes don't work for this problem.

Will any DEVs take a real look into this unresolved problem. It is probably caused by PB and the PR shaders.

That is the logical conclusion,do we have an exact time frame of when the
"suppression effects" were put it place, when the servers started checking for it and
last but not least when did these CTD's started to appear?
To me it seems like all of the above started at the same time, there is no way
in hell that's a coincident.I really wish things like "suppression effects" would get tested
properly before forcing it upon the public. As it stands right now the term "depression
effects" is a lot more accurate.
I just played half a round of Basrah on T&T a few days ago and Outlaws got
CTDed about 5 times in 30 minutes. That is a joke
Get it fixed or get rid of it.

Give it a try to confirm. Turning off PB my clan server solved the issue.

For those who have tried this PB fix posted by:
[R-DEV]fuzzheadPR Operations Lead
in the RED STICKYS at the top of
"PR help and hardware forums" named:
"Problems with Punkbuster? Solutions Here"

1. Download pbsvc
2. Start pbsvc installer, you should see options for install, uninstall, test.
3. Run the Uninstaller
4. Restart your computer.
5. Start pbsvc installer again, this time choose install.

6. After pcsvc installs, click the "test" option to check the punk buster install you just did.
5. Make sure it comes back "all green"
6. Create a pbsvc installer shortcut AND pbsetup program shortcut on your desktop.
7. Run pbsvc the program (shortcut on your desktop) add BF2 to the games list, then hit update."

If you've tried all that ,but still get CTD
I apologize for bringing it up yet again,
but as many, many have said, as well as DudeofDeath
who posted earlier in this thread,
it does indeed work for some.

If you suspect that maybe your problem is not PB
but the shaders,
Here's how I fixed one cause of CTD that was NOT pb related,
but a shaders issue that only seemed to strike when I got in a vehicle:
I don't clame this is the fix for everyone with CTD.
It may hopefully help someone
or it may not help anyone.
But at least I'm trying to help,
which is more than can be said for some of
US.

Strange tho yesterday after reading your post where you said you couldn't change the name of the file "shaders_client.zip.backup".I went in to my PR folder to test by renaming the file. I renamed the file "oldshaders_client.zip.backup" with no problems. As soon as I did it I went back and removed "old" from the name.
All back to the way it was,or so I thought.
After posting back with the suggestion you rename it ect. I log on to a server and started to play.Spawning in at mecs base I ran across to the chopper pad for a ride. AS soon as I got into a vehicle,Poof!!!
I CTD.
Having not had a CTD in quite some time I ran bf2 cleaner to flush the video card and restarted on the same server "TTP". This time I spent some time running around jumping and turning fast trying to find out what caused the CTD,
thinking I just got a 22" wide screen led (Q2201wb@PCconnection=$200.00)and I'm using the widescreen fixerAnd
it's pumping out 1680x1050 orgasmic goodness
(which was a problem at first in till I lined my chair with Velcro)
so maybe it was too much of a good thing.
Anyway all was fine in till I tried to enter a tank,
I say tried because the millisecond I pressed"E"
I was looking at my desktop.
No blinking black screen, Nada, zip.
In fact I looked at the system tray thinking the game got shoved into the background somehow, it didn't.

So restarted , but this time I started my own game in multiplayer,
got in,
everything fine intill BOOM !
enter chopper CTD.

Well I run PR on my RAID Level 1 sata2 250x2 gig "E" drive BUT I keep a working backup on "C" drive.
Switched my shortcut to "C" and no CTD. Played a few online and no CTD.
This morning I copied "shaders_client.zip.backup" from my working "C" PR folder and pasted it into PR on "E" replacing the old file. Restarted PR from "E" and created a game no CTD. Flew around map no CTD. I don't know why but I'm just glad the problem seems to be gone.
If you have messed around with your shaders_client.zip.backup
at all try replacing it.

Hope this helps
someone

EDIT 1 fixed typo:
6. Create a pbsvc installer shortcut AND pbsvc program shortcut on your desktop.

Don't take things personally PR (Pale Rider) people get really, really frustrated by these CTD and say some "not so sweet" things that they don't really mean.Hell I get frustrated having squad mates CTD on me,doesn't
help the game at all.We all know you're here to help the others.

Re: Completely random CTDs

I'm so sick of having problems with BF2. It's always something. MD5 error, patching error, freezes at 62% map loading, freezes with sound looping and now it's crashing to desktop. Fucking plagued engine. And then PC devs wonder why consoles are gaining on the PC market and claim its because of pirates.
