Microphone input too low

I just Bought a cheap 3.5mm desktop mic for battlefield voip, but no-one can hear me speak. I tried it on windows voice recorder, with no luck. The only thing that can pick it up is the the wizard (this is vista I'm talking about)
for speech recognition, which registers my speaking but very quietly. I have already done +30db in properties, but it has made no difference. Also the 'boost mike gain' box in-game is greyed out. How else can I boost the input?

I've found that USB headsets like those form plantronics are much better

On the other hand, have you put the levels on max in the sounds tab?
Sounds -> Recording Devices -> Properties of the microphone -> Levels

My VOIP setup thingy doesnt even detect my mic, but ppl can hear me fine ingame.

Good luck

Unfortunately some of those cheap mics only really work when plugged into a 3rd partyy creative soundcard with dedicated electronics. Their qualities just don't work with onboard sound at all.

However, do you know if you have your boost on? Double click on the sound icon in your taskbar bottom right to bring Volume Control window up. Click "Options". Is there a "Advanced Controls" option to click on that leaves a tickmark next to it? then you should see an "advanced" tab under the microphone slider that you can access to ge tthe mic boost control.

You also might find that when you start a map loading up, you wait till after approx 6% of the map loaded up, ALT+TAB to desktop and then bring up that Volume Control and have to unmute the slider. Also in the game Options screen for Audio you will see a boost button on the right. Is that tickable or greyed out?

how far exactly do u want the mic to be from your mouth? lol. I'd say an inch is the general standard for proper mic sound.

Depends on the microphone.

Would you put a stand-alone mic that close?

Turn 360 degrees and walk away is what you should do tbh.
