Why do I have low FPS?
While playing Fools Road, I get around 2-6 frames per second. It improves dramatically when I look straight down at the ground or enter buildings, but it is still pretty bad. This happens on only a couple of maps, but it is the worst on Fools Road. I am guessing that the problem is my outdated video card, due to the dramatic decrease in FPS when I look at trees or smoke, but I really don't know. I'd also like to get some new games, but if an old game like BF2 won't work, I don't see how anything else would. I know little about hardware, so could someone please recommend to me what needs to to updated?
System Specs. Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.80GHz 2.79GHz, 2.00 GB RAM Video card: ATI Radeon X300Series Video settings are on med/low |

I would agree with your assessment of the video card needing to be updated. It dpends on how much you are willing to spend as to what would be the best for you and whether you have an AGP or PCIE slot in your pc. Pretty sure anything with a x300 has PCIE but better make sure first.
Take a look and get back to us m8 |

x300 is pretty much a 2D desktop card isn't it? Capable of playing Counter Strike, but not much else at a smooth enough frame rate to be enjoyable?

Can you run it? will give you an idea where you computer is lacking. Remember that PR is far more complex than vBF2, so your computer will have to exceed the "recommended" (not minimal) performance tab.

Thanks. I have a few more questions:
How do I replace the video card? Can I only buy certain types of video cards? How much would I need to spend(what video card would you recommend) in order to be able to play new games(at least with med. performance) for the next 1-3yrs? |

2. Unplug computer. 3. Press "on" button a few times to release any residual static charge (safety step). 4. Unplug monitor from vid card. 5. Unplug vid card from motherboard. 6. Plug in new vid card to motherboard 7. Plug in monitor to new vid card. 8. Plug in computer. 9. Start computer. 10. Install drivers for new vid card using CD that came in the box. Any brand is ok, but there are three different connection types. Your motherboard can only support one type of connection. They are: PCI - Old technology, don't think they even exist anymore AGP - Semi-old tehcnology. Some cards/motherboards still have this type. PCIe - New technology. PCIexpress. According to what you posted, your card is a PCIe, but double check your motherboard documentation to verify. About $200-$500 USD depending on quality and where you buy it (store vs online... online is usually cheaper). Always read reviews before buying any card. | |
