Connecting Laptop + Dektop, over WAN via Modem?

Hi, I need some assistance in connecting 2 computers together...

Computer 1
Laptop with a wireless connection to the Modem

Computer 2
Destop computer with ethernet cable connection to the Modem

I need to know how I can connect the two computers together WITHOUT sticking an ethernet cable from one to the other,

I need this in order to transfer files from My Desktop to the Laptop at LAN Speeds.

What make is your modem? if indeed its just a modem at all? is it a router/modem?

If its the latter, its easily done and you should look here

PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall

Look for your router make to find a solution to your problem, if indeed it is just a single modem not a modem/router then the only way your going to do it is with a crossover cable like you pictured. Thats IF you want both of them on the internet at once.

If your only doing it to transfer files from one PC to another then the crossover cable is the way to go. You could do it the long way if you dont want crossover, ie burn the data to dvd and transfer it that way.

If you have a router/modem though its easy enough by creating a temp FTP server on one PC rather than using sh**ty windows file sharing crapola. Using and FTP server is a damn site easier and more controllable for security than windows file sharing, some will disagree but IMHO i find it a lot easier to manage in the long run.

check google for a free FTP server., You could use and FTP server with crossover too.., theres more than one way to skin a networked cat

Usually the network setup goes like this ( IF you have a modem/router )

Router address:
192.168.0.1 subnet mask 255.255.255.0

LAPTOP address: 192.168.0.2 subnet mask 255.255.255.0 default gateway and default DNS is router address: ie 192.168.0.1 You have to assign an SSID in your router and set it up to not broadcast the ID for security purposes, or setup WEP encryption to stop ppl from using your network externally. Sounds complicated but its not really. Also if your router has an access list its also best to use that as well and add the lappys MAC address to this.

PC address: 192.168.0.3 subnet mask 255.255.255.0 default gateway and default DNS is router address: ie 192.168.0.1

You "COULD" do it all via DHCP also ( assign IP automatically ) which is easier in the short term but youll probably have problems with it in the long run. IMHO its always best to sign static IP's to each computer then once its done its done no messing around with leasing times running out etc.

Set your FTP server up on either the PC or laptop create an account on the server and use an FTP client to transfer files.

Enable sharing on both machines, look into Network connections see if your other machine shows up. If both machines have the same OS its pretty easy, if one is XP the other is Vista you need to run a special patch on the XP machine so it is visible to the Vista machine. Oh, make sure both have the same network name.
