Avatar help

Hi in the forums i have seen many people with very cool avatars.
What programs did you use to make them? (photoshop? , Fireworks?)
How do you add an avatar i have tried to do this and have been unsuccessful , does the picture have to be a certain file type? such as .bmp?

Maxfragg has made a load of cool avatars for everyone to use if you're interested:

Just click the one you like, save it somewhere, then upload it again in the avatar control panel:

If you want to make your own:

And i would recommend saving in PNG or JPG.
