vista 64bit
Is it worth getting 64 bit Vista? iv been hearing alot of compatibility issues with certain programs and was wondering, is this actually a problem? and is it true that you need 64bit to go over 4 gigs of RAM?

Its is worth if you buy more than 4GB Ram. 32bit can use only up to 3,5GB depending on used Hardware (IRQ-Channels)
But in fact not much Programs are using more than 4GB Ram. And not long ago there wrent so much Drivers for 64bit. But now it seems all fine. |

How does Vista 64bit compare to the XP 64bit OS? The XP64 actually has a decent amount of support for it but Vista doesn't seem to.
Does anyone use XP 64bit? How do you fair with it? Do you find it difficult to make things work? |

I use XP 64-bit, and haven't had many problems. Only some progrmas, like Live MSN messenger installer insists that you have XP 32-bit, or Vista. It won't run on XP 64-bit, only with workarounds and there are some other programs that might get into trouble. Mostly programs from microsoft itself, since it seems they do not want to support it anymore and force Vista onto you.
Drivers are mostly not a problem, as is software for your mouse and keyboard etc. Allmost every product has drivers for XP 64-bit, at least in my case. Something else you might want to consider is that XP-64 bit doesn't come in many languages, only the major ones. Dutch (my primary language) is not available for instance. Not even on a MUI, as the MUI is only made to run on 32-bit XP and there is no 64-bit XP version. |

i got xp64, solely for my amd64 xp 4000+ (single core)
vista on the other hand has a real use for multiple cores, since it was designed for that (bf2 however is not) if u got a multicore processor and think about getting a 64 xp or vista, go with the vista to get the max out of ur system (hopefully up-to-date drivers will come/are there) as for my xp64: had a few problems running programs anti-vir wouldn't even let me install it b/c it was a 64bit system a funny thing is, that running crysis in 32bit mode give me 5-10fps more than running it with the 64.exe all in all i regret having spent that extra money because of old drivers/bad driver support and no performance gain (but i got an old pc) right now i cant run openGL programs (HL1, Celestia) because the newest nvidia drivers screw up the textures (COD4, BF2 and Crysis look good though (except for common glitches)) |

I've been a Vista user for more than a year now since the release. I first used Vista Home Premium 32, but a few months ago I formatted my computer and installed Windows Vista Ultimate 64. The main reason for the "upgrade" if you want to call it that is because I was moving from 2GB to 4GB of RAM and this was required. I also saw the benefit of 64bit programs such as 3D Studio Max. Now you are correct there are some minor incompatibility issues to expect with Vista 64, but I've installed Vista Service Pack 1 so it has made things somewhat better. If you'd asked for my opinion on Vista 64 a few months ago I would have given you a negative answer, but I've managed to grown accustomed to what Vista 64 has to offer. So I recommend you make the move if you plan to upgrade to 4GB of RAM and if you really need that much RAM for your tasks.

Windows Vista 64 will run nearly all programs compatible with Vista 32. All it does is run programs which are 32 under c:\Program Files (x86), while 64 compatible programs under c:\Program Files directory. So if the game runs under Vista 32, then it'll run under Vista 64.

I'm happy with Vista 64, and have heard support for it is better than XP64.
Every once in a while I will find an old program I would like to try that hasn't been updated and won't run, but pretty rare (I play with lots of programs) FOr instance, last time I checked Zonealarm firewall hasnt been updated yet. But you can always find another program that does the same thing that does work. I would buy it again if I had a choice. Google is your friend when ever anything comes up weird. Usually an easy fix. |
