Adding a gig of ram is the simplest and probably cheapest way to get significant improvements in performance.

Just make sure it is high performance gaming ram as opposed to something that looks like a cracker. Go to newegg.com.
Use the friendly memory finder.
If the ram looks like a gold and platinum harmonica and it fits your machine, buy it, you wont be disappointed.
These seem to be the more they cost the better they are situation.
DOnt go to walmart.

jOHNNYdOUBE is right. Go to newegg and pick out some ram that has a very high customer review rating that will work in your rig. I know a guy that just upgraded from 1 gig to 2 gigs, and it is like a completely different game for him. Bad news is he doesn't have a bank account so went to bestbuy instead of newegg, and actually paid $30 more for the exact same memory.
You could spend about $35 after rebates for 2gigs of good ram, and then sell your old 512 mb if you are super tight on $$ right now.
If you need help deciding what to buy, let us know.

it is definitly not recommendet to put a new ultra-uber-l33t ram into your pc if you plan on using the ram you already have AND it is one of those cheap-nothing-worth-bad-cl ones

either 2 new good sticks (maybe even "value pack") or the same kind of ram you already use, no need to spend extra $$ for better ram

What SnipingCoward said...
I bought 4 x 1 gb ocz dual channel paired ram sticks.

OOOOOPPPPsss, WIndows says I can only use 3.12gb.

I put in 2 x 1gb sticks and say , wait a minute ill leave those 2 512 stock sticks in there.

Well, after a month and one round of fools road ..

i'm like , "C'mon P.C. yer better that that!"

So i buy a pair if 512 kingstom gamin' ram .
Now my video card cranks to 820 mhz and ZERO stutter lag.
Only in a car on fools does it slow the fps and a few stutters, couldn't even play fools on mixed 3 gigs.

but on even -keel 3 gig, ill lower my AA back to 2x, just for FOOLs road but all the maps are the best they ever were on .613 all high and pixels at 1400 x 1000.

Oh yeah, now the dual boot XP Pro/Vista ultimate performs flawless on and video thing/transitions, 12 applications at once kinda way, and Media Center is a helluva a lot quicker..

so i take it you support my position? by replacing the 2 cheap 512mb sticks with gaming ones, the 2x1GB sticks weren't draged down anymore and you gained a performance boost

- true, if you plan on later upgrading ram again you might go with the gaming ram - even check if the performance is better without the old and only the new ram in

johnny brought up another nice little feature you should know about: dualchannel - definitly worth trying to match rams that work in dualchannel
