When I installed SP3, it took ages. even with am2 6000+ and 2gigs pc6400

When I reset my machine everything was generally faster, like after you've clean installed. Things to note though, most default file associations are set back to clean install ones, so have to make your video player (VLC) the associated program again (Jetaudio for music, etc) and I was having some issues with the volume control icon in taskbar showing muted, even though it wasn't.

Will be interesting to find out in time, if my machine slows down, if I am able to install sp3 again and speed things up again

That comment on youtbue vids being clearer, i wonder if it was because of resetting file associations, clearing conflicts between codecs installed on that guys machine?

Suppose it's possible but seems unlikely - what is the codec that youtube uses, anyways? Being a massive cynic I'm more likely to pin it onto observer effects lol.

They are saying early next year for the Vista SP1, though the beta RC is out from Microsoft if you are board and would rather do that than play PR.

Vista SP1 RC (release candidate) can be downloaded from microsoft downloads, just search for it. It made file processing like 99% faster, they have removed pretty many of those "deleteing files (1kb)" wich took longer to load than deleteing the file itself.
I recommend installing the SP1
