PR in no way affects your BF2 installation. If BF2 doesnt work then there you have your reason why PR does not work.

Have you tried installing the 1.5 patch, and then installing PR? Like I said, I had the exact same problem (with BF2 and PR both not working - same error message and everything). I made a fresh install of BF2 unmodded (and then updated it after installing it), and installed PR on there (only after updating it completely).

What you want to do is, delete that original folder entirely (the one with PR that isn't working). I think you can uninstall through the Windows Control Panel, and then "Programs" - depends on your operating system. Then, make a fresh install, and update to 1.5 (you might need 1.41 first, before this). Then, check to make sure the game works with the 1.5 patch (you should have all of the booster packs now).

After it works, install PR into that folder (click on it as the destination - the folder itself that contains all of the Battlefield 2 files - the very first folder within the EA Games folder). PR will install, and should work now.

Hopefully that helps. Let me know if it's still not working, or if I confused you.

Summary:

1. Uninstall, remove BF2 folder
2. Install BF2
3. Update to 1.41
4. Update to 1.5
5. Make sure that BF2 is working
6. If it is, install PR
7. Should work now

Use torrent download (uTorrent is a good client). Due to the nature of the technology, torrent downloads are guaranteed to be corruption free. It's usually faster too.
