Post 64bit, CTD's continues even after trying "the long foolproof" reinstall

Hi everyone, this is my first post here on the forums, but have been following this mod for quite awhile (since version 0.6xx). I've never had any problems with PR, besides the occasional crash on load and such once a month'ish - nothing that really matters that much to me.

BUT the new version is apparently giving me issues. I have CTD's at seemingly random intervals - sometimes 30mins, sometimes 3hours. I have found no connection between the CTD's and specific maps and/or moments in-game (map-change etc.).

My system is:

Mobo: ASUS Striker II Formula

CPU: Intel Q9450 Quad-Core

GPU(s): 2 Nvidia 8800GT 512MB in SLI

RAM: 8GB Corsair Dominators

Power: Corsair 850W

- And as the title suggests iam running Windows 7 64bit.

I have tried just about all the fixes on this forum. Including:

  1. Dumping the Cache - repeatedly

  2. Making new User, cant remember who suggested this, but was worth a shot.

  3. Using the /largeaddressaware fix (which just made PB kick me).

  4. Using Medium/Low settings for ALL gfx settings.

  5. Complete reinstall - and i do mean complete as in "the long and foolproof way" ie.-

    http://www.realitymod.com/forum/f27-...tml#post653667

  6. I have tried fiddling with the page file - to no avail.

  7. I have updated ALL my drivers, GFX, Sound, Mobo - all of it.

  8. I have checked my RAM for errors - they had none.

The only real clue I have, is that when I run PR in windowed-mode I get the "see through ground texture" error.

Was hoping someone could point me in the direction of something I haven't tried yet, since I've just about given up on forum surfing my way to a solution.

Thx, SyKo

I have a few random things you might (or might not) want to try:
  • Use only one GFX card, e.g. physically remove one of your cards and preferably test both of them individually
  • Adjust processor affinity of BF2.exe and make it use only one or two cores of your processor
  • Disable Xfire, Steam, Fraps and any other community/recorder/whatever apps you might have running and interferencing with BF2
  • Update OpenAL (and copy wrap_oal.dll over BF2OpenAL.dll)
  • Remove Alchemy if you have Creative X-FI soundcard
  • Lower sound quality and sound renderer settings from BF2
  • Update DirectX9

64-bit Windows is bit tricky with directories and registry keys when compared to 32-bit versions, especially if you have UAC on, so you might still have some residues left from previous installs. Thus if you want to be 100% sure you've removed everything before re-installing, you should check couple of not-very-well-known locations too (to which I have no access from this machine I'm writing this, unfortunately).

wow, what a role model of a help request post - i really like it

there's just one tiny thing... we already have a thread discussing this issue fairly thoroughly:
http://www.realitymod.com/forum/f27-...h-desktop.html

sadly there is no confirmed solution to the problem yet

a side note: with your system I suggest turning off the page file once everything is working again - looks like you don't need it and it prevents windows from unneccessarily using the HDD - 8 GB should suffice for PR, Win7 and a few other apps like xfire

"Hello, IT! ... Yes, have you tried turning it on and off again?"

i have xp and i get those ctd about after 1 hour playing, sometimes 30 mins playing.
tryed low all settings low, tryes tweak virtual memory, installed battlefield and pr again.
i tryed play pr on windowed mode to see what causes the crash but it was pain to play cos theres now groundtextures and it never crashed when windowed mode.
so finally i ended up to lower ingame resolution and it worked.
no crashing anymore.

Allright, so, just to let anyone wondering know - I found a fix for my system:

Downloaded the oldest win7 64bit driver i could find for my GFX-card - and bingo, am now running with 4x AA, 1680x1050, and HIGH everything without a hitch on 3+ maps, so to anyone out there still having issues: guru3d.com and get some of those old drivers!

May not be commendable to players playing alot of newer games, since ive noticed a slight performance decrease in Battlefield Bad Company 2.

EDIT: now on 10+ maps, seems this is a real "fix"
