does your sound in windows work (can you play and hear mp3's/youtube vids or the likes)
does voip work?
did mumble work?

what sound device are you using?
1. make sure it is selected as "default device" for "playback"
2. make sure its not muted (if using a laptop try hitting the hot-key [usually Fn + F10])
3. make sure its plugged in correctly (just check it, really!)
4. when using a headset make sure the mute switch on the cable is not active

2. can be ignored since you reported that you are able to hear sounds in general

1.
a) right click on the speaker icon next to your system clock (default: lower right corner of screen)
b) in the context menu click "Playback devices"
c) in the next window you should see some devices there
- if you have multiple sound cards (i.e. onboard + xfi) you will see both in there
- if you only have one sound card you should still at least see a "Speakers" device
d) select "Speakers" (or the sound card you are using)
e) if the button "Set Default" is not greyed out click it (make it both "default device")

while you are at it (based on your answers I suspect another possible problem):
f) click the properties buttion (while still having the "Speakers"/your card selected)
g) switch to the "Advanced" tab
h) untick "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device"
i) close the dialogs clicking "OK"

please report back if it works or not

Check your Mumble settings to see if the values were changed.

If you're using Win7, make sure BF2s volume is not muted in your sound mixer.

Hey, see if this guide helps you: Prevent PR Mumble from turning down the volume on other applications
If that doesn't work, or you need any help, add me on xfire. It's "hermansperman".
